2 TB USB HDD in BIBM - 'Errors Exist', in IFL healthy

Post by sigi »

USB HDD in BIBM - Errors Exist, in IFL healthy

I have a 2TB Western Digital USB HDD with a lot of partitions on it (cf. HD6 in the attached partinfo and IFL photo).

I normally plug the HDD Power and USB cable in while in BIOS but then still have to do a Restart from BIBM in order for it to recognize the HDD.

I don't know what happened. But for some time I keep getting a BIBM ''Errors Exist'' notification in Work with Partitions when selecting this drive. Its indicated size is 14,56 EiB. Win7 Disk Management and IFL report all Primary Partitions on that External USB HDD as healthy. The latter two do not require the USB HDD to be plugged in at BIOS.

I found out that when changing the Bus from "BIOS" to "BIOS direct", the system hangs but after Restart BIBM recognizes the USB HDD without Error notificcation. I can see all partitions and edit them. Then the Bus is of course BIOS again and after the next start the faulty situation is back again. The workaround just functions for 1 session.

Is there a persisting solution to this problem considering the fact that the same HDD performed error-free some months before?

if you're accessing it through the BIOS, BIOS provides support for it.
Which partition(s) have an "E" next to them? If at the end, it may be that
the BIOS size reported is less than the partition size. This typically
happens as the BIOS does alignment. Otherwise it could be another type of
error like read failed.

If you have a USB 2 port available you could try using the USB bus, but that
may align as well to be consistent with BIOS. If that's the case resize the
partition down a little bit. Check what the disk size reported is vs where
the partition ends to know exact amount.

There aren't any partitions displayed, so there is no "E" either and hence no hint as to where the error occurs (cf. the attached "External HDD in WwP.jpg"). As concerns the BIOS size reported please refer to the note at the end of this post.

I once tried to use the USB bus but I didn't think of using a USB 2 port. I used a USB 3 port and had a mess afterwards. I don't exactly remember what happened. There may have been involved Resets, Powering off the PC, synchronising the 2 internal and the external HDD's (which took quite some time). I would hate to repeat this with a USB 2 port all the more so as I have always experienced advantages in BIBM using USB 3 instead of USB2.

Please refer to "External HDD in IFL.jpg" attached to my first posting. Which partition should I resize by what amount (most of my images are stored in "GrosRest")?

NOTE
--------

I wondered what EiB is. It is not in the Terabyte Support Glossary. It should be there since it is used in BIBM.

I googled it and found the following definition:

Techopedia explains Exbibyte (EiB)
------------------------------------------------

Exbibyte is related to an exabyte, which is equal to 10^4, or 1,000,000,000,000,000,000, bytes. Exbibyte comes before zebibyte and after pebibyte. It was created by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) but its use has been diminished in favor of the SI unit exabyte.

So, BIBM WwP tells me that my external 2 TB HDD should have a size of 14,56 billion gigabytes. That ridiculous value is obviously related to the error.

errors exist with nothing read means the request to read it failed. Getting
other oddball information from the BIOS as well. Older BIOSes you could
hotswap for BIOS USB support but most newer ones only work on the boot.

If I interpret your answer correctly I cannot get out more of my BIOS (if I do not want to flash it). I will have to live with what I have.
That means that all BIBM-specific functions can only be applied to my 2TB USB HDD using the one-time workaround described in my first posting. For imaging on that HDD I will have to use IFL.

Could you please list some of the functions with respect to an external USB HDD that can only be carried out in BIBM and not in IFL.

Although there is no question mark at the end of this phrase it was in fact meant as a real question. I would be much interested in the answer because I have bought both BootIt Collection and the "TeraByte Drive Image Backup and Restore Suite" and I am not at all sure whether I have spent to much money and would continue to do so when upgrading both or whether BootIt Collection will give me an extra benefit over the Suite thus justifying to upgrade both.

partitioning feature in IFL needs the BIBM key.

The imaging products are more about backup images and copying
drives/partitions. BIBM has a partition manager and boot manager (IFL
includes the partition manager but requires BIBM key to unlock).

Thank you for your answer. Shortly before you posted it I detected part of it for myself when creating an IFL CD from my ''Terabyte Drive Image Backup and Restore Suite V3''. MakeDisk informed me that "Licensed users of BootIt Bare Metal  can enter their product key below to unlock additional features" (cf. Attachment). You made it clear in your answer what the additional features are.
