Moving Win 10 to new M.2 drive

Post by Logman »

I just bought a Samsung 970 Evo NVMe M.2 500GB SSD and I want to move ( if possible ) the Win 10 installation currently on a Samsung SATA SSD 850 Evo 250GB drive.

The motherboard is an Asus Z270E with an i7-7700K @4.20GHz

Win 10 was originally installed in Legacy mode and SSD is MBR not GPT

I'm not sure if the new 970 EVO will install in Legacy mode and will probably have to change my BIOS setting.

There are 3 options for Boot devices control in the BIOS: [UEFI and Legacy OPROM] [Legacy OPROM Only] [UEFI Only]
It is currently set for Legacy only as when it was set for UEFI and Legacy mode, I couldn't install Ubuntu as it wanted to change the drive to EFI.

Is that going to be a problem with the current Win 10 Legacy setup ?

I would really like to keep the current W10 installation and move it to the new drive as everything has been working so well for a couple of years now and it is set up just perfect for me.

The reason I bought the new drive is I want to install multiple Linux Distros like I have on an older computer and need more HD space for that.

What is the best way to proceed with this ?

Is it as simple as restoring an image from the old setup to the new one or is there a "proper" way to do this ?

Things like this used to be a breeze for me years ago, but I find with the new systems and me getting to be twice as old as dirt, things aren't so simple now .

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

if you need to use uefi, then backup entire drive, make the conversion using
chgdtype.tbs script. Ensure booting okay, attach new drive, ensure windows
accesses okay, then go ahead and copy or backup/restore to the new drive and
remove the old prior to booting (check bios boot order).

Thanks for the reply,

I have installed the new drive and it was recognized in my BIOS and Win10, I didn't have to use UEFI.

It is recognized in Win 10 okay, I did a quick format and it is NTFS

So if I don't need to use UEFI can I do the same backup of entire drive including BIBM and restore it to the new drive without converting to UEFI ?

If I did convert, what does that process do, change from MBR to GPT ?

If so, would I then have to use BIU instead of BIBM ?

I would prefer keeping everything as is if possible.

If you convert then it will use GPT and boot in UEFI mode. BIU would be needed since BIBM doesn't support UEFI booting.

If you want to stay with Legacy, BIBM, and MBR then a normal entire drive backup and restore should be fine (this assumes the system will boot the new drive in Legacy mode).

Thanks for that Paul,
I'll try the Legacy mode and see what happens.

Well the copy went okay, I now have the new M.2 drive running.

Only problem I see is that BIBM is now in the middle of the drive with unallocated space on each side.

Thought it would be simple to move the BIBM partition to the end but can't seem to do it

It seems to work okay the way it is but I would really like to just move the BIBM partition to either the beginning or end of the drive.

You would need to use the boot media if you wanted to do something with the partition. I assume it was in the middle originally.

No, originally it was on the end of the old drive.

When I copied the old drive to the new one, there was an extra 250GB of free space on the new drive.

Whenever I tried to use the boot media, it wouldn't let me do anything.

I'd like to delete the Boot Manager and reinstall it but when I did that yesterday it seemed to foul up the whole computer, all I got was a Missing EMBR error, no matter what I tried to do to recover it, took me hrs to finally get an older whole drive image to restore.

I'm sure I'll get it figured out eventually.

Finally figured out how to remove BIBM.

I was trying to do it from the Boot media and the uninstall option was greyed out on the Utilities Menu in BIBM on disk.

So I booted into the Boot manager menu from the SSD , clicked on maintenance and there was the uninstall option under Utilities.

Now I can setup BIBM how I want it.

I must say installing the M2 drive was worth all the troubles I went through, I boot into Win 10 in 5 seconds now 8-)

You would use scale to fit when copying and it would move it.

After the fact, you slide it simply by booting the boot disk, going to
maintenance / partition work and sliding it.
