Can't install Ubuntu 18.04.2 error EFI on top of Legacy

Post by Logman »

Have been trying to install Ubuntu on an Asus Z270E computer.

WIn 10 was installed in Legacy mode originally (MBR)

I installed BIBM with no problem.

Set it up for the Ubuntu install, everything was okay.

Used the USB stick for the Ubuntu install, everything seemed to go okay until near the end when it popped up a message saying something like " EFI on top of Legacy install " then the install brought up a screen saying it's a known problem but no solution that I could find.

Booted back into BIBM and it showed the Ubuntu partition was not bootable.

I looked in the BIOS and the USB boot stick was set for UEFI:USBxxxx

I changed that to non UEFI USB and when I tried again to install, it gets so far and just hangs.

Is there a solution for this ?

I do have multiple distros on my old (non UEFI )computer including 18.04.2 but wanted to retire the old computer and just have the one desktop.

If your system is working in legacy (MBR) mode, you need to install Ubuntu in legacy mode.

Some installers can install in either mode (UEFI or legacy). The Windows 10 installer is like this, because it contains the files needed for both modes. But other installers may contain only the files for one mode (UEFI or legacy, but not both).

Did you create the Ubuntu installation memory stick so that it can install in legacy mode?

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated !

I finally managed to get Ubuntu installed, turned out there was another setting in the BIOS I had missed, under CSM mode, there was an entry for UEFI and Legacy OPROM ( not a mistype) or Legacy OPROM Only, so I changed it to Legacy Oprom only and it worked.

As for creating the Ubuntu installation memory stick, there was no option like Legacy when I created it from the ISO, maybe because the BIOS was in the UEFI or Legacy setting ?

Anyway, it did install, the only thing now is when I boot into Ubuntu, there is an annoying Grub boot loader to choose between WIN 10 or Ubuntu.

Doesn't seem to be a problem but I have never seen that before in all the Linux distros I have on another machine.

BIBM Boot Manager works fine, brings up the proper screen to choose which OS to boot, just that when it boots Ubuntu I get that Grub menu.

In general, lots of grub information is at

You would want to edit the configuration and remove the entry you don't need
then update. This article has that process of editing and update (but it's
for a different purpose so you don't follow all the other steps).
