BIBM 1.54 Makedisk issue

Post by DrTeeth »

After many years of making BIBM install media, I am having problems
with the latest version.

I get write errors when trying to write to my SD card on Win 10 and
the drive loses its drive letter.

I have tried and tested two different cards and two different readers
as well as running makedisk as admin...all without success.

Does anybody know what is going on here?

the latest version uses more space, there is only 1024 bytes free when
creating on 2.88 media. Write errors or unable to create file error?

If write error, then something is blocking it or windows references to it
are not up to date for makedisk to lock it, remove from the system plug back
in.

DrT,

That happened to me 5 minutes ago although I've seen it with previous versions. Usually using a different UFD works.

I looked at the problem UFD in BootIt. It was a GPT disk with a single partition. I deleted the partition, converted to MBR and created a FAT partition. Now the UFD works with MakeDisk.

DrT, was your UFD a GPT disk?

It just happened to me again. Converting to MBR and leaving the partition fixed it.

I was using 2 different SD cards with more than enough capacity. As
you know, "GPT" is a dirty word here and both SDs were MBR. Used a
regular USB drive in the end.

More than enough space available. The error was "an error occurred
when writing to the device". Two different SD cards and two different
card readers used in several USB ports. Regular USB flash drive worked
first time.

I used to feel the same way. But no longer.

I know you are a fan of GPT and are the "go to" chap for any help in
that arena. I should have put a ":-)" in my comment above.

Not only can I not think of anything useful that GPT could do for me,
having so many partitions scattered all over the place just looks too
messy! The *only* place I am tidy is on my PC's storage. I'm a real
life Oscar Madison!
I am planning to place a fourth hard drive in my PC (the new hybrid
drive that was swapped out for the SSD). Naturally, it's a 2TB drive.
can always use more space.

No need as we know this is light hearted banter.

You already have 10 to 15 (or more) partitions on that SSD. Another 2 or 3 (required for GPT) wouldn't make it more messy.

One per OS is not messy at all in my book ;-). To boot an OS on GPT,
one needs more than one partition.

If there were a way to *easily* convert my MBR drive to GPT, I would
consider having a dabble to see what is on offer. I only have to look
at some of the long threads dealing with GPT issues to make me shudder
and break out in a cold sweat.

I know I have asked this before (cannot find the answer), but apart
from the increase in drive size above 2TB, what does GPT offer?
