Partition Work gets altered

See viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2876&p=15540#p15540 for only slightly related info.
On the system mentioned there, Partition Work on the installed BIU should indicate the presence of 3 disks: Main HD, external USB HD, and, I think, a printer which could, but doesn't, contain an SD card.
Sometimes, Partitiion Work only shows one disk, the main HD which restricts what can be done with Partition Work and Disk Imaging because it also only sees one disk. Also, the Boot Items are then messed up, because they don't contain the external HD.
I think I'm at the point where I can restore EFI partition to get things back where they belong.
I don't know yet whether or not there is a predictable sequence of events that causes BIU to get into this damaged state.
