Make it easy for yourself. Use the Normal Boot Menu and not the Direct.

The boot files are all in the "Reserved" (100mb) partition. So I guess that partition is what embr is pointing to? Both win7 boot and "directboot" now point to the same reserved partition. So in this case, is there any difference if I use direct boot, or does Win7 access boot code through embr and the other direct boot access directly to the reserve partition?

Both direct boot and win7 boot now point to the came boot code in the reserve partition. When I click on direct boot it brings up as list of
partitions to boot from and you must select reserved partition to get the same windows startup gui.
So, again is there any difference in selecting direct boot as opposed to win7, and if so, for what purpose?

In your particular configuration, either method would be the same result. In most cases, it's easier to use the Boot Menu since it allows more control over the partitions and it handles unlimited primaries.
