Jim,

We'd need to see a screenshot of Disk Management to decide which partitions need to be compacted but basically...

Convert to MBR/EMBR
change BIOS to Legacy mode
boot Win10
create image of the OS (and ? other relevant partitions) on 1 GB HD
remove 1 GB HD
restore OS image to M.2 SSD
boot Win10
re-install 1 GB HD
install BIBM to M.2 SSD

Hi Brian,

I already have the BIOS changed to secure boot=disabled and legacy bios=on.

Can you explain what you mean by "convert to mbr/embr"?

I mean, I kind of understand what mbr and embr are after years of using BING, but what do you mean by the "convert" part and what am I converting and how?

I mean: I can see the partitions in BIBM when I boot BIBM from the USB, doesn't that mean that it's already using the EMBR?

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

Convert GPT to MBR/EMBR will enable your Win10 OS to boot in Legacy mode. You are converting HD0, the drive containing Win10. At present your partitions are something like...

Recovery
EFI System
Microsoft Reserved (not seen in Disk Management)
Win10
maybe others

The conversion will give you a MBR first track and changed partitions. Such as...

Recovery
Win10
maybe others

Now Win10 will boot in Legacy mode and you will be able to install BIBM. You can do this from your BIBM UFD. Click Run, chgdtype.tbs.

But first, can you post a screenshot of Disk Management so we can determine what should be done? Make sure we can see the Capacity and Free Space columns.

Hi,

Here's a link to a folder on Onedrive with some screenshots, including the boot selection menu (F12 key) and the BIBM screens:

BTW Brian how do you do that convert GPT to EMBR?

It seems like there is only one GPT partition?

Also, BTW, in the BIOS boot screen:

- Internal Diskette --> boot the USB that has BIBM on it
- UEFI xxx -> Boot Window 10\

I don't think any of the other selections boot anything.

Jim,

Thanks, great info.
There is another BIOS setting you could change. "Compatibility Support Module". CSM. It should be Enabled for Legacy mode and Disabled for UEFI mode.

At present could you change your system back to UEFI mode, boot in to Windows and let us know the Total Size and amount of Free Space in the C: drive. Also, start IFW, Backup, on the "Select the hard drive or partitions to backup" window, select the Win10 line and click Information. What is the GiB Used, GiB Free and GiB to Restore?

More info on Convert soon.

Hi,

I keep forgetting to mention: I already got/downloaded a recovery image from Dell, on a USB stick and I've used it once already to restore so I think it is good. So, I don't have a problem blowing the Win10 image away.

In case that makes things easier.
