Viewing MBR and order of partitions

Post by eldiener »

If I view the MBR from one of the items in my Boot Menu, the order of partitions shown is different from when I view the MBR from another item in the Boot Menu. Why would this ever be ? Shouldn't the order of the partitions in the MBR be shown as the same for all items in the Boot Menu ?

no, that's one of the main features where each boot item can control the
order and existence of partitions.

Sorry for the very late reply, as I had forgotten I asked about this issue until recently.

I am not using the BIBM feature ( EMBR ) which allows more than 4 primary partitions on an MBR drive, and I have never manually changed the order of MBR partitions. So why would I see a different order for different boot items ?

It is not bothering me as far as using BIBM to multi-boot, but I was just wondering why I might be seeing it so that different boot items show different orders of my 4 primary partitions.

The EMBR is used even with limit primaries. The boot item controls the
order.

But if I have never changed the order of the four primary partitions for a boot item, why would one boot item show the four primary partitions in a certain order and another boot item show the four primary partitions in a different order ? I am using the View MBR button from different boot items.

I can't look at Boot Edit while I'm running Windows, but my recollection is that when you create each boot item you have to designate which partitions are included in that boot item and you can put them in any order. You probably put them in different orders in different boot items either intentionally or accidentally.

Go into Boot Edit of a particular item (you don't have to actually change anything). Look at the right side. Again, from recollection, I think you will see four "slots" there into which you can put partitions in any order you choose.

You could delete a couple and then put them back in the opposite order.
