it should find it right away if it exists at was at the start of drive. If
not and only the 100M is there, it got overwritten, so you'd have to try the
option to put back the old boot sector and see what you get.

Delete the found Ubuntu partitions, but don't clear the boot sectors --
don't make any writing changes in that space. Same with any other partitions
it finds there. The entire space should be "Free Space" since it was all
used by the Windows 7 partition.

Then delete the 100MB partition and select to clear the boot sector. At that
point you could try the undelete again and see if it finds the Windows 7
partition (it most likely won't). If it finds other partitions again, just
delete them (don't clear the boot sectors). Should be all "Free Space"
again.

Use TBOSDT to restore the boot sector. Then try the undelete again.

I do not quite understand the meaning of this statement. If I interpret it correctly you just wanted to shorten the procedure by skipping the deletion of the 3 partitions found by "undelete" and going directly to restore the old Win7 boot sector. But since you do not imply that Paul's approach wrt the 3 partitions was wrong I will do these deletes as described in Paul's last posting before I put back the old boot sector in its proper place. Please correct me if I am wrong.

With respect to restoring the correct boot sector I would like to ascertain the completeness of PP's command line.

Is it unnessessary to indicate the path of bootsect.bin?

Basically, when you run the undelete on the free space, if the Windows 7 partition is there it should be found immediately since it was located at the start of the drive. If it's not found then you would restore the saved "bad" boot sector (so the drive is back like it was) and then proceed with any other data recovery attempts.

As long as you're in the folder with the file you don't need to specify the path. In BIBM you should be, so the path isn't needed.

But it was not located at the start of the drive was it? There was a 6 MiB Free Space in front of the Win7 partition. And so Undelete restored other partitions. Now, do I have to delete those prior to putting the saved bootsect.bin in its proper place or can I skip this step (of deleting the 2 ubuntus plus the 100 MiB [and the 2 Extended?])?

It was located at the start of the drive -- as in, "near the beginning" of the drive. The point is, it should find it quickly if it's going to since searching through 6MB takes virtually no time.

You need to delete the Ubuntu partitions and any others that are in the space where the Windows 7 partition is supposed to be (so, everything that was undeleted). That space should all show as one big free space area. Don't clear the boot sectors when deleting these. The only partition that you would clear the boot sector when deleting is the 100MB partition.

That includes the two Extended as well. I will delete these too (does no harm anyway). The Clear Boot Sector thing is understood. It applies only to the 100 MB.
To make it quite clear I will do the Deletes now prior to putting the saved bootsect.bin in its proper place.

When reading this last posting again it occurred to me that I had formulated it like a statement of my intended next step. In fact I wanted this to be understood as a question. It would be very reassuring for me if I could get a short confirmation of the correctness of the intended course of action or otherwise.

Those are the correct steps. When you undelete and need to try again in the same space you need to delete the undeleted partitions to get the space free again. Otherwise, those partitions will get in the way of the search. You should have one block of "Free Space" at the start of the drive (located before the LxMint17 partition).

you can simply put the sector back at this point, that's what's going to be
needed, the question is after undeleting whether you'll get access to any
files or it will be RAW.

Editorial note:
I deleted my previous post at this place.

Here is what I did recently (please refer to the picture http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/ucf/do ... php?id=379 attached to an earlier post):
deleted 2 ubuntu partitions without checkmarks
deleted 2 Extended partitions without checkmarks
deleted 100 MiB partition with "Clear Boot Sector" selected
copied the saved backup boot sector to the original boot sector location
applied Undelete to the Free Space so created at the start of HD-0

The Win7 partition showed up in no time with the Close Button highlighted.

I then created a boot item for the undeleted Win7 partition and tried to boot it. I got the message;
"A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

I put the undeleted Win7 in the LxMint boot item and booted LxMint.
The Attachments show what GParted makes of this partition and in contrast thereto what it makes of the Win7_10 called Win7_Koy, the offender. This comparison shows that my LxMint has no difficulties dealing with NTFS.

What shall I do now?
