Install problems

Computer: New HP Envy Laptop Model 15-u111dx 1TB WDC hard drive Windows 8.1 I-7 Intel 5th gen. cpu

Trying to install from flash drive. Got it to boot from the flash drive okay and going through the install process it won't find a place to install BM and dumps me out in manual mode. As I go through manual mode and get to the "work with partitions" page to select where to install it, it states that all the partitions are GPT.

When I click "change disk type" and select EMBR (or MBR) I get an error that says "your request is being ignored because EFI Systems required a GPT".

I can not get beyond this point, so I would appreciate the official solution to this problem.

Mack,

If you want to convert your GPT disk to MBR/EMBR you can use chgdtype.tbs from BIBM boot media. (click the Run button) Then you will be able to install BIBM.

Thanks for your help. Since this is a new PC and the first new one I have had in a long time, and the first one with Windows 8.1 I need to fully understand the consequences before I make such a change.

I do not understand what GPT means. If I make the change will it have an impact my system?

What about the error message that "EFI Systems required a GPT". I don't know what EFI systems is, do I need it?

I just don't want to brick my new computer.

Thanks for being patient. I am a long time Bootit NG user from 2005. Just haven't used this new upgrade and the new stuff is difficult for me.

Mack,

You can't install BIBM on a GPT disk. Have a look at these pages to help you understand GPT disks and UEFI firmware...
