I want a clean install of Win 10 WHEN I decide to get it.

I did download one earlier version and since I haven't used Win 8 in any
form, I was not impressed.

That is what I am talking about. I remembered that excellent tip from
one of your posts - on how to use an upgrade disk to get a clean
install. That WILL get you a clean install and when you want it.

That method has indeed worked in the past, but this time it's different. They're not selling upgrade disks any more -- just full version disks are available. This started with 8.1.

The only upgrade is the free one. For it, you have to start the process from a running, activated, legal copy of Win 7 or 8.1, which will be replaced by Win 10 in the process. You can go back to the old version if you want, but you can't dual-boot it with Win10. I thought that's what the OP was wanting to do.

You ARE supposed to be able to do a clean Win 10 install, though. You go through the upgrade process, and then can re-install from scratch using an ISO. As long as the hardware (likely determined by the motherboard) is the same as when you upgraded, you can re-activate your clean installation.

This is all based on information on Microsoft's web site, and other FAQs, most notably the one on the MS Insider web site.

If the situation has changed as you say, and I do believe you, it
should not be a problem for us here.

One can create a new partition and do a clean install of Win 7/8.I
would then fully update it and get the correct drivers in, and then
upgrade that partition. If one cannot upgrade Win 10 itself like one
could in the past, this must be the next best thing. I would never
upgrade an old and running previous version.

I do not like the sneaky way MSoft if 'offering' the free upgrade and
have disabled it in all my eligible partitions. That flag was annoying
me as I like to keep all icons in the notification area visible.

DrT,

As a test I did this with the latest Win10 and my current Win8 system. I was stunned as the result was "perfect". Everything continued to work just as it did with Win8. I can't believe we won't be able to multi-boot an upgraded Win10 and a clean Win10. That is my plan.

Ed,
If you only get the downloaded version of Win 10, how would I do a clean
install?

Was there enough info to know?
Thanks

Mary,

My understanding is you..

upgrade Win8 to Win10
either make an ISO from your OS or download an ISO
delete the Win10 partition and install Win10 from the ISO. Clean Win10 will automatically Activate as Microsoft has your computer information from the upgrade procedure.
