Unable to swap drives

Post by eldiener »

I wanted to install Windows 8 on my second hard drive. So I followed the instructions in the document "How to Completely Install Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 to an Alternate Hard Drive".

Even though I followed all the instructions and saw the message from BIBM that it was swapping the drive, once the reboot occurred and the Windows 8 installation disk started the installation the result was that Windows 8 saw my hard drives in their original order and therefore would not install itself to the partition on the second hard drive designated for it.

Is there a reason why the Swap option would not work ?

swap works for booting and real mode - a protected mode OS is going to see
the physical drives in whatever order they enumerate them in.

So there is essentially no way of installing Windows 8 on a hard drive that is not HD0 ? Why then do you document such a way in a BIBM knowledge base article if it cannot work ?

You can install it following that, or installing it as a single drive
system, then moving it over and using swap. Booting a copy from something
other than HD0 doesn't mean Windows will see it as HD0 once the kernel is
loaded and it switches from using the BIOS to drivers.
