Hi,

My motherboard is getting a tad flaky. Some issues with the USB ports
and some of the integrated devices have had to be replaced. It is
working satisfactorily at the moment (and has been for a while), but
my gut feeling is that it could need replacing at short notice at some
point.

It is an Asus. The current board works with USB mice and BIBM but I
had one that did not.

Does TBU have any views on which m/bs BIOSs work well with BIBM or
those that have been known to be amenable to fixing bugs? I would want
the BIOSs set up so that the system can have BIBM installed and be
usable as the boot manager.

Buying from a company with a rep for good quality would be a plus too.

Any ideas or views?

When you do replace that MoBo, I'd suggest you also replace the P/S.
That might be why your having intermittant troubles w/USB items.

Even though the PSU is branded and from a good quality make and there
are no other issues? May do it anyway as they are not that expensive.

I don't have any, but you may want to start by trying a new power supply or
even the surge protector power strip.

Look at it this way.....most often, electronics fail early on in their
life, unless user inflicted damage. You've had & used that MoBo for
quite some time and other than the USB issue it's been reliable right?

USB might be seeing instability in the 5v rail of the P/S....maybe.

True, and IF you do get another, get one somewhat bigger in wattage.
You'll only use what's actually needed, but have a buffer of sorts for
future expansion.

I had a WD (IDE) hard drive that was acting a bit flaky.
WD suggested a new cable.

I thought "Yeah, sure"

A new cable did make a difference.

Also a cheap replacement when doing other work.

I hear that one a lot. But ya do have to wonder how the heck do such
cables go bad?......hmmmmm.

My MoBo (ASUS-P8Z77-V Deluxe) has 8 SATA ports, 3 of which are eSATA.
When using the 2 rear eSATA port those cables need to be shimmed
slightly for best contact.

One thing might be heat?

If you mess with different stuff, inserting/removing could
also be involved.

I hate SATA connectors. They are very fragile. I have to have a stock of new cables just in case as I look after 4 desktops here. Never had probs with those PATA cables.
