Problem:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

Event Log ID 8194 is logged when a backup is run. A sample error is shown below:<\/p>\r\n

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the IVssWriterCallback interface. hr = 0x80070005. This is often caused by incorrect security settings in either the writer or requestor process.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Cause:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

This error is caused by incorrect or missing COM access permissions.<\/p>\r\n

This error does not cause any issues and does not affect the use of Image for Windows.<\/p>\r\n

Solution:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

To set the correct permissions and prevent the error from occurring, follow the instructions below:<\/p>\r\n

    \r\n\t
  1. Press and hold the Windows<\/strong> key and press R<\/strong> to pull up the Run dialog. Alternatively, if Run...<\/strong> is available from the Start Menu you can access it from there.

  2. Type dcomcnfg<\/span><\/strong> into the box and click OK<\/strong>. The Component Services window will appear.
    \r\n
    \r\n<\/li>\r\n\t
  3. In the left portion of the window, expand the Component Services<\/strong> section and then expand the Computers<\/strong> section.
    \r\n
    \r\n<\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Right-click on My Computer<\/strong> (listed in the Computers<\/strong> section) and select Properties<\/strong> from the pop-up menu.
    \r\n
    \r\n<\/li>\r\n\t
  5. Click the COM Security<\/strong> tab. The My Computer Properties dialog will appear.
    \r\n
    \r\n<\/li>\r\n\t
  6. Click the Edit Default...<\/strong> button in the Access Permissions<\/strong> section. The Access Permission dialog will appear.
    \r\n
    \r\n<\/li>\r\n\t
  7. Under the Group or user names<\/strong> box, click the Add...<\/strong> button.
    \r\n
    \r\n<\/li>\r\n\t
  8. Type Network Service<\/span><\/strong> into the box and click OK<\/strong>.

    \r\n<\/li>\r\n\t
  9. Click OK<\/strong> on both the Access Permission and My Computer Properties dialogs to close them.
