{"id":318,"date":"2007-02-20T05:36:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-20T13:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kb.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb-articles\/how-to-use-the-bcd-edit-feature-of-bootit-ng\/"},"modified":"2021-09-06T23:09:32","modified_gmt":"2021-09-07T06:09:32","slug":"how-to-use-the-bcd-edit-feature-of-bootit-ng","status":"publish","type":"lsvr_kba","link":"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb\/kb-articles\/how-to-use-the-bcd-edit-feature-of-bootit-ng\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Use the BCD Edit Feature of BootIt NG"},"content":{"rendered":"BootIt NG, beginning in version 1.80, includes a feature that enables you to view and edit the boot configuration data (BCD) for Windows Vista.&nbsp;&nbsp;Version 1.86b adds&nbsp;support&nbsp;for Windows 7.&nbsp;Please note that when working with partitions that do not contain a BCD file, this feature will not be accessible.<br \/>\r\n  <p><strong><font color=\"#ff5500\">Accessing BCD Edit<\/font><\/strong><\/p>To view or edit a partition's BCD file:<br \/>\r\n  <ol>\r\n    <li>Click the <strong>Partition Work<\/strong> icon on the BootIt NG desktop (or press Alt+W).&nbsp; The <strong>Work with Partitions<\/strong> window appears.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Select the appropriate drive using the radio buttons on the left side of the <strong>Work with Partitions<\/strong> window.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Select the appropriate partition. For&nbsp;Windows Vista, it will usually be the Vista partition. For Windows 7, it&nbsp;will be the System Reserved 100MB partition if it exists, otherwise it will usually be the Windows 7 partition. Once the correct partition has been selected, click the <strong>Properties<\/strong> button (or double-click the partition).&nbsp; The partition's <strong>Properties<\/strong> window appears.<br \/><br \/>\r\n      <ul>\r\n        <li>If the correct partition has been selected, a <strong>BCD Edit <\/strong>button will appear near the bottom of the <strong>Properties <\/strong>window.&nbsp; If the <strong>BCD Edit <\/strong>button does not appear, the partition does not contain BCD.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n      <\/ul>\r\n    <\/li>\r\n    <li>Click the <strong>BCD Edit <\/strong>button.&nbsp; The <strong>BCD Edit <\/strong>window appears.&nbsp; <strong><em>Note:<\/em><\/strong> If you click the <strong>BCD Edit<\/strong> button and get a <em>No BCD Store<\/em> error message, you have probably selected the wrong partition. <\/li>\r\n  <\/ol><strong><font color=\"#ff5500\">Important BCD Settings<\/font><\/strong><br \/><br \/>To boot Windows Vista or Windows 7, ensure that your BCD is configured as follows:<br \/><br \/><font color=\"#000080\"><strong>Menu Entries<\/strong><\/font><br \/>\r\n  <ol>\r\n    <li>Select the <strong>Menu<\/strong> radio button on the left side of the <strong>BCD Edit <\/strong>window.&nbsp; An entry titled <strong>Microsoft Windows Vista<\/strong> or <strong>Windows 7<\/strong> should appear in the <strong>Items<\/strong> list.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Select the <strong>Microsoft Windows Vista<\/strong> or <strong>Windows 7<\/strong> item and then click the <strong>Edit<\/strong> button (or double-click the desired item).&nbsp; The properties of the selected item will appear in a new window.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Select the <strong>Device <\/strong>entry from the list of Properties and then click the <strong>Edit <\/strong>button (or double-click the <strong>Device<\/strong> entry).&nbsp; The <strong>Edit<\/strong> window appears.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>In the upper <strong>Type <\/strong>drop-down list, select the hard drive number on which Windows Vista \/ Windows 7&nbsp;is installed.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>In the lower <strong>Type <\/strong>drop-down list, select the partition on which Windows Vista \/ Windows 7&nbsp;is installed.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Click <strong>OK<\/strong> in the <strong>Edit<\/strong> window.&nbsp; You will be returned to the window showing the properties of the <strong>Microsoft Windows Vista<\/strong> or <strong>Windows 7<\/strong> item. <\/li>\r\n  <\/ol>\r\n  <blockquote style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" dir=\"ltr\">\r\n    <p style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" dir=\"ltr\"><font color=\"#ff0000\"><strong>Note:<\/strong><\/font> Repeat Steps 3 - 6 for the <strong>OS Device<\/strong> entry (i.e. in Step 3, select the <strong>OS Device<\/strong> entry).&nbsp; When done, click <strong>Close <\/strong>to return to the <strong>BCD Edit<\/strong> window.<\/p>\r\n  <\/blockquote>\r\n  <p style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" dir=\"ltr\"><font color=\"#000080\"><strong>Boot Entry<\/strong><\/font><br \/><\/p>\r\n  <ol>\r\n    <li>Select the <strong>Boot<\/strong> radio button on the left side of the <strong>BCD Edit <\/strong>window.&nbsp; An entry titled <strong>Windows Boot Manager<\/strong> should appear in the <strong>Items<\/strong> list.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Select the <strong>Windows Boot Manager<\/strong> item and then click the <strong>Edit<\/strong> button (or double-click the <strong>Windows Boot Manager<\/strong> item).&nbsp; The properties of the <strong>Windows Boot Manager<\/strong> item will appear in a new window.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Select the <strong>Device <\/strong>entry from the list of Properties and then click the <strong>Edit <\/strong>button (or double-click the <strong>Device<\/strong> entry).&nbsp; The <strong>Edit<\/strong> window appears.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Generally, you should have <strong>{boot}<\/strong> selected in the upper <strong>Type <\/strong>drop-down list.&nbsp; In this case, the lower <strong>Type <\/strong>drop-down list will be unused and inaccessible.&nbsp; However, if necessary, you may use the upper <strong>Type <\/strong>drop-down list to select the hard drive number on which the BCD file resides (i.e. the hard drive where the file <strong>bootmgr <\/strong>can be found).<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>If you have a specific hard drive selected in the upper <strong>Type <\/strong>drop-down list, you must also select the partition on which the BCD file resides for the lower <strong>Type <\/strong>drop-down list.<br \/><br \/><strong><font color=\"#ff0000\">Note:<\/font><\/strong> Repeat Steps&nbsp;2 -&nbsp;5 for the <strong>Windows Memory Diagnostic<\/strong> entry (i.e. in Step 2, select the <strong>Windows Memory Diagnostic<\/strong> entry). <br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Click <strong>OK<\/strong> in the <strong>Edit<\/strong> window.&nbsp;
