{"id":262,"date":"2005-07-24T04:36:00","date_gmt":"2005-07-24T11:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kb.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb-articles\/error-message-boot-disk-failure-on-startup\/"},"modified":"2021-09-10T13:48:35","modified_gmt":"2021-09-10T20:48:35","slug":"error-message-boot-disk-failure-on-startup","status":"publish","type":"lsvr_kba","link":"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb\/kb-articles\/error-message-boot-disk-failure-on-startup\/","title":{"rendered":"Error Message &#8220;Boot Disk Failure&#8221; On Startup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Problem:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>When attempting to boot, you receive the message:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px;\">\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>BOOT DISK FAILURE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p><strong>Cause:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>This issue can be caused by a number of circumstances:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The hard drive jumper(s) are configured as <strong>Master with Slave Present<\/strong>, but no slave is actually present on the IDE channel to which the drive is connected.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The hard drive has failed.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>No active partitions are present.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>If the hard drive jumper(s) are configured as <strong>Master with Slave Present<\/strong>, but no slave is present on the IDE channel to which the drive is connected, correct the jumper configuration.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Run the drive manufacturer's utility on the drive, if possible.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>If necessary, set the appropriate partition active using one of the following methods:<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<ul type=\"disc\">\r\n\t<li>Use BootIt BM, referring to the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb\/?p=491\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to Manually Set a Partition Active<\/a>, if necessary.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Boot into DOS and use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/downloads-free-software\/#mbrwork\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MBRWork<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Boot into DOS and use the Microsoft FDisk utility.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Problem:\u00a0 When attempting to boot, you receive the message: BOOT DISK FAILURE Cause:\u00a0 This issue can be caused by a number of circumstances: The hard drive jumper(s) are configured as Master with Slave Present, but no slave is actually present on the IDE channel to which the drive is connected.
