{"id":241,"date":"2005-04-04T03:32:00","date_gmt":"2005-04-04T10:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kb.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb-articles\/error-message-an-error-has-occurred-reading-writing-from-to-the-hard-drive-ignore-the-errors-and-continue\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T17:01:59","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T01:01:59","slug":"error-message-an-error-has-occurred-reading-writing-from-to-the-hard-drive-ignore-the-errors-and-continue","status":"publish","type":"lsvr_kba","link":"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb\/kb-articles\/error-message-an-error-has-occurred-reading-writing-from-to-the-hard-drive-ignore-the-errors-and-continue\/","title":{"rendered":"Error Message &#8220;An error has occurred [reading\/writing] [from\/to] the hard drive; ignore the errors and continue?&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff5500;\">Problem:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>During an imaging or restore operation, respectively, you receive the following error message:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px;\">\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">An error has occurred reading from the hard drive; ignore the errors and continue?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">An error has occurred writing to the hard drive; ignore the errors and continue?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff5500;\">Cause:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The hard drive has one or more defective sectors.<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff5500;\"><strong>Solution:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>To regain full function of the hard drive, try one or more of the following:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Run the CHKDSK.EXE utility on the problematic hard drive, using the <strong>\/R<\/strong> parameter.\u00a0 For example:<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">chkdsk \/r c:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<strong>Note:<\/strong> Using this command may require Windows to reboot to do the actual scan. In addition, for Windows Vista and Windows 7\/8.x\/10\/11 you may need to run the command from an Administrator Command Prompt.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Run the hard drive manufacturer's utility on the hard drive, using the most thorough settings available.\u00a0 Use the following links to locate the appropriate software:<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px;\">\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seagate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seagate<\/a><br \/>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wdc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Western Digital<\/a><br \/>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hgst.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HGST\/WD<\/a><br \/>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.toshiba.com\/tai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toshiba<\/a><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Run <a href=\"http:\/\/grc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SpinRite<\/a> on the hard drive, using <strong>Level 2<\/strong> or higher.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Problem:\u00a0 During an imaging or restore operation, respectively, you receive the following error message: An error has occurred reading from the hard drive; ignore the errors and continue?
