{"id":229,"date":"2005-01-07T05:28:00","date_gmt":"2005-01-07T13:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kb.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb-articles\/message-unable-to-start-phylock-for-drive-n-you-may-need-to-reduce-the-cache-size-appears-when-attempting-to-backup-a-partition\/"},"modified":"2021-09-07T15:05:33","modified_gmt":"2021-09-07T22:05:33","slug":"message-unable-to-start-phylock-for-drive-n-you-may-need-to-reduce-the-cache-size-appears-when-attempting-to-backup-a-partition","status":"publish","type":"lsvr_kba","link":"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb\/kb-articles\/message-unable-to-start-phylock-for-drive-n-you-may-need-to-reduce-the-cache-size-appears-when-attempting-to-backup-a-partition\/","title":{"rendered":"Message &#8220;Unable to start PHYLock for drive [n]: &#8230; You may need to reduce the cache size.&#8221; Appears when Attempting to Backup a Partition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To correct this problem, decrease the value of <strong>RAM Cache Size (KB)<\/strong> found on the Image for Windows settings dialog or, if desired, configure Windows to allow a larger non-paged memory pool and\/or quota.<\/p>\r\n  <p><strong>Configure the Non-Paged Memory Pool<\/strong><\/p>\r\n  <p>The non-paged memory pool is not used by normal programs; it is used by drivers and applications&nbsp;when paged memory cannot be used.&nbsp; Memory that is not part of the non-paged pool is part of the paged pool that normal programs&nbsp;use.&nbsp; Therefore, you can waste&nbsp;memory by making the NonPagedPoolSize too large.<\/p>\r\n  <p>On the other hand,&nbsp;making the&nbsp;NonPagedPoolSize&nbsp;too small&nbsp;can cause&nbsp;the operating system to halt during startup.&nbsp; If that were to happen, you would need to revert to the last known good configuration [F8].&nbsp; <br \/><br \/>The default value for <strong>NonPagedPoolSize<\/strong> and <strong>NonPagedPoolQuota<\/strong> are each 0, which allows Windows to decide what sizes to use.<br \/><\/p>\r\n  <p><strong>IMPORTANT<\/strong>: The&nbsp;instructions&nbsp;below contain information on modifying the registry.&nbsp; Before you modify the registry, you should back it up&nbsp;and&nbsp;understand how to restore&nbsp;it if a problem occurs.&nbsp; For more information, see:<\/p>\r\n  <p><a class=\"KBlink\" href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/256986\/EN-US\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">256986<\/a> <strong>Windows registry information for advanced users<\/strong><\/p>\r\n  <p>To change the size of the Windows non-paged pool and\/or quota:<br \/><\/p>\r\n  <ol>\r\n    <li>Start the Registry Editor.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Navigate to the following key:<br \/><br \/><strong>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE&#92;SYSTEM&#92;CurrentControlSet&#92;Control&#92;Session Manager&#92;Memory Management<\/strong><br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Change the value named <strong>NonPagedPoolSize<\/strong> to the number of <u>bytes<\/u> to allocate for the&nbsp;non-paged memory pool.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Change the value named <strong>NonPagedPoolQuota<\/strong> to&nbsp;the maximum number of <u>megabytes<\/u>&nbsp;a single program (process)&nbsp;can allocate from the non-paged memory pool.&nbsp;&nbsp;Valid values are from 0 to 128.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Reboot for the new values to take effect. <\/li>\r\n  <\/ol>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To correct this problem, decrease the value of RAM Cache Size (KB) found on the Image for Windows settings dialog or, if desired, configure Windows to allow a larger non-paged memory pool and\/or quota.
