This means that if you had two partitions in the MBR where the first partition is farther into the drive, you will receive a <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&lt;SystemRoot&gt;&#92;System32&#92;hal.dll is missing or corrupt<\/span><\/strong> message when setup reboots.<\/p>\r\n<p>To correct this problem, use <em>one<\/em> of the following methods:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Use the BootIt\u00a0BM installation media to reactivate BootIt BM, then boot from the boot item used to start the Windows XP installation.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<strong><em>-- Or --<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>In BootIt BM, go to <strong>Maintenance<\/strong>, <strong>Partition Work<\/strong>, <strong>View MBR<\/strong> and then reorder the partitions as they should be.\u00a0Then, click <strong>Apply<\/strong>, <strong>Close<\/strong>, and <strong>Reboot<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you are\u00a0receiving this message other than when\u00a0installing Windows XP, please refer to the following article: Message &#8220;Windows Could not Start Because the Following File is Missing or Corrupt&#8221; (NTOSKRNL.EXE or HAL.DLL).
