{"id":186,"date":"2004-10-19T07:12:00","date_gmt":"2004-10-19T14:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kb.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb-articles\/how-to-completely-install-win9x-me-to-an-alternate-hard-drive\/"},"modified":"2021-09-06T23:09:43","modified_gmt":"2021-09-07T06:09:43","slug":"how-to-completely-install-win9x-me-to-an-alternate-hard-drive","status":"publish","type":"lsvr_kba","link":"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb\/kb-articles\/how-to-completely-install-win9x-me-to-an-alternate-hard-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Completely Install Win9x\/ME to an Alternate Hard Drive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To completely install Win9x\/ME to an alternate hard drive use the steps below.<\/p>\r\n  <p>These steps assume you want to install Win9x\/ME to the second hard drive (HD1).<\/p>\r\n  <ol>\r\n    <li>Make sure you have a Win9x CD-ROM installation boot diskette (included with the OEM version) or a bootable CD. <br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Using the <strong>Work with Partitions<\/strong> dialog, create and format the partition on HD1. <br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Using <strong>Boot Edit<\/strong>, create and save a boot item for it: <br \/><br \/>\r\n      <ul type=\"disc\">\r\n        <li><strong>HD<\/strong> will be 1.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n        <li><strong>Boot<\/strong> partition should be the one you created in Step 2. <br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n        <li>If you want other primary partitions visible on HD0, then check the <strong>Swap<\/strong> check box under <strong>Boot Details<\/strong>; otherwise, check the <strong>Swap<\/strong> check box under <strong>One Time Options<\/strong><em>.<\/em> <br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n        <li>If booting from the CD-ROM using the <strong>Next BIOS Device<\/strong> feature of BootIt NG,&nbsp;put a check in the <strong>Next BIOS Device<\/strong> check box under <strong>One Time Option<\/strong>. (Your BIOS boot order must have the CD-ROM after the C: drive for this to work. If you're going to boot directly from the CD-ROM and the BIOS boot order has the CD-ROM before C: then you don't need to enable this option.)<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n        <li>If the <strong>Swap<\/strong> check box under <strong>One Time Option<\/strong> was checked, then the <strong>MBR Details<\/strong> for HD0 will need to either have all primary partitions hidden or have one (visible) extended partition in it. (If you used the <strong>Swap<\/strong> checkbox under <strong>Boot Details<\/strong> then you don't need to hide\/remove the primary partitions, but it's probably a good idea to do so during setup anyway.)<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n        <li>The <strong>MBR Details<\/strong> for HD1 will have the partition you created in Step 2.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n      <\/ul>\r\n    <\/li>\r\n    <li>Boot with the item created in Step 3. If you are booting from the CD-ROM using the <strong>Next BIOS Device<\/strong> option, then setup should start from the CD-ROM (skip to Step 6). Otherwise, you should get a message that no operating system exists on the partition. <br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Insert your Win9x CD-ROM installation boot diskette and\/or CD-ROM (you can do the floppy install if you have to) and press <strong>Enter<\/strong>. <br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Begin the Win9x installation to the C: drive. <br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Click <strong>Finish<\/strong> to reboot the computer. <br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>You can now just keep booting the new Win9x\/ME boot item to continue with the setup. If you use the <strong>Swap<\/strong> option under <strong>One Time Option<\/strong> then just make sure you don't add any visible primary FAT partitions to hard drive 0 or that drive becomes C:.<br \/><\/li>\r\n  <\/ol>\r\n  <p><strong>Note:<\/strong> If you enabled the <strong>Swap<\/strong> option under <strong>Boot Details<\/strong> then you can check the system properties\/performance tab to see if Win9x is using real mode drivers for drive access.
