{"id":176,"date":"2004-10-14T17:16:00","date_gmt":"2004-10-15T00:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kb.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb-articles\/blinking-cursor-or-disk-i-o-error-a-disk-read-error-occurred-or-i-o-error-reading-disk-error-message\/"},"modified":"2021-09-07T15:25:35","modified_gmt":"2021-09-07T22:25:35","slug":"blinking-cursor-or-disk-i-o-error-a-disk-read-error-occurred-or-i-o-error-reading-disk-error-message","status":"publish","type":"lsvr_kba","link":"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb\/kb-articles\/blinking-cursor-or-disk-i-o-error-a-disk-read-error-occurred-or-i-o-error-reading-disk-error-message\/","title":{"rendered":"Blinking Cursor, or &#8220;Disk I\/O Error&#8221;, &#8220;A Disk Read Error Occurred&#8221;, or &#8220;I\/O Error Reading Disk&#8221; Error Message"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This article addresses the following issues, which can occur when attempting to boot from a partition which had been copied or restored using BootIt BM:<\/p>\r\n  <ul>\r\n    <li>Nothing&nbsp;but a blinking cursor in the upper left corner of the screen. <\/li>\r\n    <li>&quot;Disk I\/O error&quot; error message. <\/li>\r\n    <li>&quot;A disk read error occurred&quot; error message. <\/li>\r\n    <li>&quot;I\/O error reading disk&quot; error message. <\/li>\r\n  <\/ul>\r\n  <p>These problems can result if the following conditions are true:<\/p>\r\n  <ul>\r\n    <li>You are not using BootIt&nbsp;BM to boot the partition. <\/li>\r\n    <li>The &quot;Use HD0 in BPB&quot; setting was not enabled at the time of the copy\/restore. <\/li>\r\n    <li>The destination drive was not HD0. <\/li>\r\n  <\/ul>\r\n  <p>The problem is that the BPB points to the incorrect hard drive.&nbsp; To solve this problem, do any <em>one<\/em> of the following:<\/p>\r\n  <ul>\r\n    <li>Boot BootIt BM, enable the &quot;Use HD0 in BPB&quot; setting, use Partition Work to view the properties of the affected partition&nbsp;and answer the &quot;Correct BPB HDNum&quot; question with a Yes.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>Enable the &quot;Use HD0 in BPB&quot; setting and copy or restore the partition again.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>If the&nbsp;platform is&nbsp;DOS, Windows 9x, or Windows Me, boot with an OS startup diskette and issue the following command: &quot;sys c:&quot; where &quot;c&quot; is the drive letter of the boot partition in question.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>If the platform is&nbsp;Windows NT, run the Windows NT setup program and select the &quot;Inspect Boot Sector&quot; option.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n    <li>If the platform is Windows 2000 or Windows XP, boot into the Recovery Console and use the&nbsp;&quot;fixboot&quot; command.
