{"id":165,"date":"2004-09-26T23:07:00","date_gmt":"2004-09-27T06:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kb.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb-articles\/special-note-for-opening-zip-files-using-compressed-folders\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T17:09:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T01:09:13","slug":"special-note-for-opening-zip-files-using-compressed-folders","status":"publish","type":"lsvr_kba","link":"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb\/kb-articles\/special-note-for-opening-zip-files-using-compressed-folders\/","title":{"rendered":"Special Note for Opening ZIP Files Using Compressed Folders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many versions of Windows (e.g. Windows Me, Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7\/8.x\/10\/11) are configured, by default, so that double clicking a ZIP file opens the contents of that ZIP file in an Explorer window, much like a normal folder on your hard drive.\u00a0 Microsoft refers to this feature as <em>Compressed Folders<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n<p>However, it is important to note that the files shown by Explorer in the compressed folder cannot be used or manipulated in entirely the same manner as files in a normal folder.\u00a0 For example, before using the TeraByte Unlimited\u00a0\"TBICD2HD\" utility, all applicable ZIP files must be fully extracted first.\u00a0 You can think of this process as copying the files from the compressed folder to a normal folder.<\/p>\r\n<p>With that in mind, here is what you need to do to handle the ZIP files provided by TeraByte Unlimited, if you are using the compressed folder feature:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>After downloading the ZIP file, double-click it to open it.\u00a0 If Windows\u00a0is configured to use compressed folders, then the contents of the ZIP file will be displayed in an Explorer window.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>In the left pane of the Explorer window (or on the top button bar), you should see a link that says <span style=\"color: #0003ff;\">Extract all files<\/span>.\u00a0 You can select this command and then use the Extraction Wizard to proceed with the extraction of the ZIP file.\u00a0 Once you have used the Extraction Wizard to extract the contents of the ZIP file to a selected folder, you can simply open the extraction target folder in Explorer and manipulate the files as needed. <br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Alternatively, or if you do not see the <span style=\"color: #0003ff;\">Extract all files<\/span> command, you can manually select all the files listed and copy them to another folder to extract the contents of the ZIP file.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<hr id=\"null\" \/>\r\n<p>Please refer to the following links for more information on using compressed folders:<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/windows.microsoft.com\/en-US\/windows7\/Compress-and-uncompress-files-zip-files\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Compress and uncompress files (zip files) in Windows 7<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/windows.microsoft.com\/en-US\/windows-vista\/Compress-and-uncompress-files-zip-files\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Compress and uncompress files (zip files) in Windows Vista<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;306531\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How To Use Compressed (Zipped) Folders in Windows XP<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/272996\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Description of Compressed Folders and Files With .Zip File Extensions in Windows Millennium Edition<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many versions of Windows (e.g. Windows Me, Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7\/8.x\/10\/11) are configured, by default, so that double clicking a ZIP file opens the contents of that ZIP file in an Explorer window, much like a normal folder on your hard drive.\u00a0 Microsoft refers to this feature as Compressed Folders.
