&#8220;Windows Could not Start Because the Following File is Missing or Corrupt&#8221; (NTOSKRNL.EXE or HAL.DLL)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This article addresses the case where you receive the following message when attempting to start Windows NT\/2000\/XP\/2003:<\/p>\r\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Windows NT could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:<br \/>\r\n&lt;Windows directory&gt;&#92;system32&#92;ntoskrnl.exe<br \/>\r\nPlease re-install a copy of the above file.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Or:<\/p>\r\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:<br \/>\r\n&lt;Windows directory&gt;&#92;system32&#92;hal.dll<br \/>\r\nPlease re-install a copy of the above file.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>This problem can have a number of causes, but if it began occurring after performing some operation with BootIt BM, the most likely cause is that the BOOT.INI file does not point to the correct partition number where the Windows directory is located.<\/p>\r\n<hr \/>\r\n<p>\u00a0To resolve this issue, you need to do one of these two things:<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li>Correct the <em>partition(x)<\/em> entry in the BOOT.INI file to make it agree with the current contents of the MBR Details in BootIt BM. <br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Use BootIt\u00a0BM to reorder the partitions in the MBR Details section to make it agree with the current contents of BOOT.INI.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p>You will need to choose method (1) above if the <em>partition(w)<\/em> entry in BOOT.INI references an invalid partition number (e.g. if it points to <em>partition(3)<\/em>, but you only have 2 partitions).\u00a0 In other cases, you can choose either method.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #005858;\">If you choose to edit BOOT.INI and leave the contents of MBR Details as-is, proceed as follows:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li>Refer to the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb\/?p=159\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How Partition Numbers are Assigned in BOOT.INI<\/a> for information on how to determine the correct <em>partition(w)<\/em> number to use in BOOT.INI. <br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Edit BOOT.INI and change the <em>partition(w)<\/em> value as needed.\u00a0 To edit BOOT.INI:<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul type=\"disc\">\r\n\t<li>Edit BOOT.INI from within BootIt\u00a0BM (as explained in the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb\/?p=498\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to Edit BOOT.INI (and Other Small Text Files) with BootIt BM<\/a>).<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Use the free TeraByte Unlimited utility <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/downloads-free-software\/#editbini\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EditBINI<\/a>, which will let you edit BOOT.INI from DOS or Windows 95\/98\/Me.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #005858;\">If you choose to edit the MBR Details and leave BOOT.INI as-is, proceed as follows:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li>Examine the contents of BOOT.INI to determine what the value of <em>partition(w)<\/em> is for the applicable entry.\u00a0 To view BOOT.INI:<br \/>\r\n\u00a0\u00a0\r\n\r\n<ul type=\"disc\">\r\n\t<li>View\/edit BOOT.INI from within BootIt\u00a0BM (as explained in the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb\/?p=498\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to Edit BOOT.INI (and Other Small Text Files) with BootIt BM<\/a>). <br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Use the free TeraByte Unlimited utility <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/downloads-free-software\/#editbini\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EditBINI<\/a>, which will let you view\/edit BOOT.INI from DOS or Windows 95\/98\/Me.<br \/>\r\n\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Click the <strong>Boot Edit<\/strong> icon on the BootIt\u00a0BM desktop to open the <strong>Boot Menu<\/strong> window. <br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>In the <strong>Boot Menu<\/strong> window, select the applicable menu entry and then click the <strong>Edit<\/strong> button. <br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>In the <strong>MBR Details<\/strong> section of the <strong>Edit Menu Item<\/strong> window, select the applicable MBR entry and move it to the MBR slot that coincides with the value of <em>partition(w)<\/em> in BOOT.INI (as explained in the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb\/?p=159\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How Partition Numbers are Assigned in BOOT.INI<\/a>).\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Please note that the two numbers (i.e. <em>partition(w)<\/em> and the MBR slot number) may
