{"id":121,"date":"2004-08-11T16:07:00","date_gmt":"2004-08-11T23:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kb.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb-articles\/installation-tips-for-sun-solaris\/"},"modified":"2021-09-07T23:19:10","modified_gmt":"2021-09-08T06:19:10","slug":"installation-tips-for-sun-solaris","status":"publish","type":"lsvr_kba","link":"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb\/kb-articles\/installation-tips-for-sun-solaris\/","title":{"rendered":"Installation Tips for Sun Solaris"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>These notes will assist you in installation of Solaris to hard drive 0 when the \"Limit Primaries\" option is not enabled in BootIt NG.<\/p>\r\n<p>If you want to install the bulk of Solaris to a hard drive other than zero, then you can still reference these instructions just create a Solaris boot partition (BEh\/190) on HD0 and the other partitions on the other hard drives.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>(Solaris 8 Notes provided by Ton V.)<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><b>If you are using Solaris 8, then do not use the WebStart installation<\/b> contained on the 'Installer CD' , instead boot (eventually via the floppy) the 'Software 1 (of 2) CD'.\u00a0 This will bring up the 'Interactive Installation' which has no problems with predefined partitions.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nThis is documented in the Solaris 8 (Intel Platform Edition) Installation Guide however not very 'visible'.<\/p>\r\n<p><b>Installation Notes<\/b> (originally) provided by BootIt user Virantha M.\u00a0\u00a0 They have been modified for BootIt NG.<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li>Use the \"Work with Partitions\" dialog to create a new partition for the Solaris installation.\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Select 130 ( Linux Swap\/Solaris ) as the file system ID.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Name the partition Solaris 7.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>I created a partition of 1192 MB<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>From the desktop click on \"Boot Edit\"<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Click on the Add button to create a new boot item.\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>In the Name field enter Solaris 7<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Tab to the \"Boot\" Field<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Choose the Solaris 7 partition created in step 1.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Tab to MBR Details Section<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Make sure Solaris 7 is the only visible partition. This is important.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Click OK to save boot item<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Click OK again to save changes to boot menu.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Click on the resume button to display the \"Normal\" Boot Menu.\u00a0\u00a0\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Boot the Solaris 7 item.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>When the message \"Partition is not bootable! Boot from diskette (Y\/N)\" is displayed<br \/>\r\ninsert the Solaris 7 boot diskette - Device configuration Assistant\/boot<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Click on Yes to boot from the diskette.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>In the Solaris installation Screen select 1. Solaris Interactive option<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Select software ...<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The \"Select Disk Screen\" should appear with a disk already selected. <br \/>\r\nThe size of this disk should be very close to the Solaris 7 Partition<br \/>\r\ncreated in Step 1. In my installation I can see 1153MB as the size of<br \/>\r\nthe disk. This is normal.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nIf for some reason the selected disk is not the correct size, skip to<br \/>\r\n<a href=\"#solnote1\">NOTES 1<\/a> and come back here to continue.<a name=\"solnoteret\"><\/a><\/li>\r\n\t<li>Continue with the rest of the screens<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Select Auto Reboot at the last screen and remove the floppy.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nInstallation continues and the machine will reboot after the installation.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nAs the machine reboots you will notice that there is no BootIt NG menu<br \/>\r\nappearing. This is because the Solaris installation has overwritten the <br \/>\r\nMBR on the disk.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nNext steps are intended to reactivate BootIt NG.\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li>Reboot the PC to make sure Solaris reboots OK without any problems<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Put BootIt NG Floppy and reboot the PC<\/li>\r\n\t<li>From \"Floppy Boot Menu\" select Reactivate BootIt NG and click OK.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Remove the diskette and click OK to reboot the computer.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>BootIt NG Menu is displayed.\u00a0<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nThat's All.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p>-----------------------------------------------------<br \/>\r\n<a name=\"solnote1\"><\/a><b>NOTES 1.<\/b><\/p>\r\n<p>Now we have to try and force Solaris Installation to use our disk (Partition)<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li>In \"Select Disk Screen\"\u00a0<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nSelect EDIT FDISK option somewhere in the middle of the screen.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>In the \"Customize fdisk Partition Screen\" there will usually be two entries with headings:<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nPartition Size<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\na) Solaris Some Size<br \/>\r\nb) Other the size here relates to the partition created in step 1<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nUse the mouse to toggle Solaris --&gt; Unused<br \/>\r\nOther ----&gt; Solaris<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nPress OK<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Back in \"Select Disk Screen\"<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nThe selected disk should have a very similar size to the partition <br \/>\r\nwe created in step 1.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Go to <a href=\"#solnoteret\">Step 8<\/a> in the previous notes.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<hr \/>\r\n<ul type=\"square\">\r\n\t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb\/?p=100\">How to Install an OS to Its Own Partition<\/a><\/li>\r\n\t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb\/?p=101\">How to Activate Multi-OS<\/a><\/li>\r\n\t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb\/?p=102\">How to Add an OS to a Multi-OS Partition<\/a><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These notes will assist you in installation of Solaris to hard drive 0 when the &#8220;Limit Primaries&#8221; option is not enabled in BootIt NG.
