{"id":105,"date":"2004-08-08T23:12:00","date_gmt":"2004-08-09T06:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kb.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb-articles\/how-to-convert-a-fat-fat32-partition-to-ntfs\/"},"modified":"2021-09-07T15:25:37","modified_gmt":"2021-09-07T22:25:37","slug":"how-to-convert-a-fat-fat32-partition-to-ntfs","status":"publish","type":"lsvr_kba","link":"https:\/\/www.terabyteunlimited.com\/kb\/kb-articles\/how-to-convert-a-fat-fat32-partition-to-ntfs\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Convert a FAT\/FAT32 Partition to NTFS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><font color=\"#ff0000\"><strong>Important:<\/strong> If you will be using Windows XP to convert the FAT\/FAT32 partition to NTFS, please see the note at the bottom of this article before performing the conversion.<\/font><\/em><\/p>\r\n  <p>To convert a FAT or FAT32 partition to NTFS, use the native Windows NT4\/2K\/XP CONVERT.EXE utility.&nbsp; The general format of the command you would want to use is:<\/p>\r\n  <p><strong>CONVERT [driveletter]: \/FS:NTFS<\/strong><\/p>\r\n  <p>For example:<\/p>\r\n  <p><strong>CONVERT C: \/FS:NTFS<\/strong><\/p>\r\n  <p>For full information on how to use CONVERT.EXE, enter this command from a command prompt:<\/p>\r\n  <p><strong>CONVERT&nbsp;\/?<\/strong><\/p><hr \/>\r\n  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n  <p><strong><font color=\"#ff0000\">Note:<\/font><\/strong> Using CONVERT.EXE will result in an NTFS partition with 512-byte clusters.&nbsp; This is not necessarily a problem.&nbsp; However, if you want a larger cluster size to be used in the resulting NTFS partition, you <em>must<\/em> follow these instructions <em>before<\/em> running CONVERT.EXE as outlined above:<\/p>\r\n  <p><em><strong>[This procedure will only be effective if you will be using Windows XP's CONVERT.EXE for the conversion.]<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\r\n  <ol>\r\n    <li>In BootIt BM, go into <strong>Partition Work<\/strong>. <\/li>\r\n    <li>Select the FAT\/FAT32 partition you wish to convert to NTFS. <\/li>\r\n    <li>Click the <strong>Align<\/strong> button. <\/li>\r\n    <li>Read the message displayed and click the <strong>Continue<\/strong> button. <\/li>\r\n    <li>When the alignment has completed, click the <strong>Close<\/strong> button.<\/li>\r\n    <li>Defragmenting the partition at this point (prior to running CONVERT.EXE) is recommended. <\/li>\r\n  <\/ol>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Important: If you will be using Windows XP to convert the FAT\/FAT32 partition to NTFS, please see the note at the bottom of this article before performing the conversion.
