Restore a IFW to a virtual machine Virtualbox

Post by badamsiosllc »

Top of the morning Y'all!

Running Windows 11 Pro and I want to run Linux as the primary OS and host my current OS as a guest using virtualbox.

Can, I Dad? Can, I? Huh? Huh? Huh?

you can use copyp2v.tbs script to create a .vmdk file that can be used in virtualbox.

Since it defaults to looking in C:\windows\system32, I'm guessing the script needs to be edited? What kind of editor does one use? That's definitely not ascii.

And thanks for the quick response!

Hello again...

I was able to create the .VHD and create the new machine, but when I start the new machine I get an error saying either the OS or DVD are missing or the boot order it wrong. OS if the 1st boot device.

sounds like no active partition, did you use the copyp2v.tbs script?

Sure did! It works with Microsoft's Hyper-V, but I want to run the VM under Virtualbox on Linux Mint.

Setup the VM as a single drive, then add additional virtual drives once you know it boots.

Went through the exact same process and this time it worked. Odd. I always verify bit by bit.

At least it works on my desktop on Windows. Installing Linux on my laptop now. I wanted to make sure the concept worked before blowing windows away on the laptop.

Thanks, much!

Well, I guess it's a moot point. Downloaded Linux Mint, went through all the checksums to verify it's authenticity and validate it's integrity and it fails to install claiming it can't write a file and stops.

Ran Windows chkdsk/f /r /x, no errors. Downloaded it again, verified all, and fails at the same file.

Same thing with Opensuse. 2 times.

Don't like Ubuntu's interface.

Ah, well... Nothing earth shattering. Retired and bored.

Thanks anyway!
