(SOLVED) T for Win -600MBs then 100MBs

Well, I may get to play with it in the near future - I parted with 850 and got a bundle (Microcenter) ASUS Prime Z790-V WIFI, I9-12900k, 32GB, Sam 980 Pro 1T M.2 . and box etc. Maybe tomorrow I'll stick my WD in there and see what happens. It has 3 internal m.2 sockets. Not the latest or greatest, but cut 1/3 off the price and flies. I just imaged my laptop nvme and put it on the 980 and it booted right up, both mint and win. toys!

okay, with this: ASUS Prime Z790-V WIFI, I9-12900k, UEFI/GPT, 32GB, Sam 980 Pro 1T M.2
The 980 crystal tests at 6900/4900 R/W
The WD tests at 3500/3000MBs
Both are plugged to mobo m.2 slots.
The backup started at 15-1600MBs and after maybe 45 seconds dropped to ~550-600MBs.
Completed in 3min 19sec - about twice the external SSD speed.
122GB.
WD has big heatsink on it. 980 has small one.

So it dropped as before but instead of dropping from 350 to 150, it dropped from 1500 to 550MBs.
Why?

The burst in the beginning is caching. You can control all that if you want, see the /po option (couple values missing, 0x1000=direct to disk (no disk caching), 0x80=overlapped io).

Yeah. Thanks all. I am beginning to wonder if this isn't an artifact of the WD nvme and in any case sometime in the next month or so after I have recovered from the new box, I'll get a second 980 Pro and put that in there and see. Meantime I'll back up slow-like to the old external sata ssd as even that is pretty quick. (6 min)

I especially like how Terabyte makes it relatively easy to identify and backup/restore my non-NTFS linux stuff, so thanks for that. I will post again to this thread after I get the second 980, so in a month or so - just to follow up.

(I find things generally work better if I don't fuss with the options!)

This was to an Inland TN450 500GB 4x4. Same prob - starts at 1500-1600 and after a minute it drops to ~530MBs
I am guessing heat. (there is a small HS on it.)
Any ideas as to what I can do to Terabyte to change this behaviour? Like maybe having it do a max of say 1000MBs?

As mentioned, it's the caching before it catches up to the drive limits (or external process interfering). Try using a boot disk.

Also as mentioned, you can use the /po option to control caching, plus you can adjust any of the various /mt options to limit or increase the threads which may give the system more threads to do what it wants. Also phylock vs vss can make a difference. The calculation is based on both read/write not just one side and includes all the integrity added to the image as well. You can disable speed up changes only backup option and it will reduce the number of files written.

The anomaly happens the same when using a boot stick.

how would I specify the /po or /mt options since I am not executing it command line but starting it in windows, or booting to it via a usb stick?

You could stick it in the ifw.ini file or save command line and just add them as needed for testing.

I ran some tests on my system (which a an Asus Z690), I see the drop off if using phylock (as expected) but with vss it starts and stays at the average ~5xxMiB which is different than older windows versions - vss was faster on them, so some changes. I tried some various /po and /mtXXX options but stayed about the same. We'll be able to confirm something things in the future.

What do you get with Image for Linux - using file (os) (meaning you need to mount the target path first) and file (direct) ?

Thanks for the ideas. Not sure how to select VSS over Phylock - What I did was in (win10) Image for windows, settings / phylock/vss tab, and set those as shown in pic. Still got dip. The dip does not occur at the same time so I don't think it is caching size - might happen 15sec-45sec in.

I have never used image for linux. I only use i4w in win10 or the usb stick.
