I've never had "core storage" active on any volume/HDD. Checked a long time ago. Just want to mention that somewhere along the line I heard it's possible the error happens because the BCD(Boot Configuration Data) gets all messed up between Creators Update and OS X... haven't verified.

I follow that, but since I have been doing "multi-partition, whole
drive" backups for over 10 years [on my PC] I wanted to keep that
simplicity, if possible. Using IFL, I have never had a failure.
Since I have never located the first person who has successfully
accomplished a whole drive [Bootcamp] restore, I don't care to be the
guinea pig.
