Poll - do you use byte-for-byte verification?

Post by timg11 »

I have issues with byte-for-byte verification failures. I've used IFW since it was released, and always have enabled B4B verification. For years I never had any failures, until I first tried a solid state drive. There is no way to tell if using a SSD is the cause, or if the issues developed due to other reasons (such as changes in Windows or changes in IFW)

The B4B verify option is not selected by default, but it seems to me that it is important to ensure that an image is usable for recovery.
Knowing how "fragile" Windows is, I'm sure there are quite a few bytes throughout the disk that, if modified, would cause disastrous consequences.

When I get failures, it seems to be just a matter of trial and error with combinations of settings until it finally works. I don't understand the underlying issues.

Who uses byte-for-byte verification?
Do you have problems with failures? Do you use a SSD?

I use BFB every time using both IFW (mostly) and IFL
and do not have SSD.

Problems are rare.

I do full backups weekly, incrementals daily in between. No SSD. I use byte-for-byte on the full backups. Problems are rare, if ever.

I rarely use byte-for-byte verification. I mainly use it as a check on
the quality of cables, memory etc. If it passes, I use regular
verification for a while. BFB takes *much* longer than regular
verification.

I use bfb verification once or twice on a new machine to confirm the
hardware is working correctly, then regular verification after that.

The most likely failure is in the writing and read-back of the image
from the backup media, and regular verification will catch that.

No regular SSDs here (yet).

I've used bfb for years, and never had any problems until recently, and only backing up an SSD. For a while, it would fail every time, apparently just as it began reading the source drive. I relectantly switched to just validating the image.

A few weeks ago, I had to restore an image on that drive. It worked fine, including bfb verification on the restore. Since then, bfb has worked correctly agian when backing up that drive.

I haven't a clue as to why this happened.

I use /vb for all backups and /v as well as /vb for all restores.

It's interesting how restore times can vary, depending on which app is used. The following times are relative times, using IFL as 1. (Your times may be different)

(Restore time is the total for using a /v /r /vb restore)

It's a plot by computers to drive their human masters crazy so they
can take over. Simples!

Question:
Does the problem occur backing up from ssd drive, or backing up to a ssd drive, or from and to a ssd drive?

( I backup a SSD to non-ssd and have never had any problems.) Just curious.

I have always used it. But I had the same issue with you in that it failed every time with an SSD. I ended up purchasing another product for backing up that machine (my main one). I still use IfW on one of my 3 that has a regular hard drive.

just out of curiosity, what SSD were you using?
