Fast startup off always?

Post by hwdornbush »

I have been turning off Fast Startup on Windows 8 before I do an Image for Linux backup, and then turning it on after the backup completes and I reboot into WIndows 8, which seems to work fine. I like the speed of Fast Startup but wonder if this method is OK. Any insights?

There is no point whatsoever in backing up the way you are. The
problem with Fast Startup (apart from the fact that it ain't that
fast) is if one has a data partition that is common to two OSs.

If you modify the data partition outside of Win 8, you will get
massive disk corruption of that partition when you next load win 8.

If you have separate data partitions or OS partitions visible to Win8
you should (I would say MUST) disable Fast Startup. If Win 8 can only
'see' itself, there is no need to disable it.

That's my understanding. I think it is sound, but I am happy to be
corrected if mistaken.

Any partition that Windows 8 sees can be affected. They can be OS partitions or data partitions. Even when Windows 8 can only "see itself" there can still be problems if you boot to a different OS (IFL, for example) from the shutdown state. When using Fast Startup it's best to disable it before booting to another OS (this includes boot media) or make sure to do a restart from Windows 8 instead of a shutdown.

In this particular case, the user could insert the IFL boot media and then restart Windows 8 and boot directly to the IFL media. This would avoid having to disable/enable Fast Startup.

Personally, I tend to leave it disabled because I don't find it faster and it's easy to forget the state and then run into problems.
