SSD install - aligned to boundaries?

Post by Bertk »

Now that I have the Sandisk SSD installed and imaged with IFL, the Note below suggests aligning the partition to 4k boundaries.
Using a SSD benchmark utility I found that partition C: created and formatted using BIBM is aligned to 1698k which shows - Bad.
The D: partition which I formatted using Win7 is aligned to 103362560k which shows - Good.

What is the best approach to go about changing the alignment to 1024k on the C: partition?

NOTE: In order to get the best performance out of your SSD, you must make sure that your partition is aligned to 4K boundaries. This alignment is being done automatically in Windows 7, Windows 8, and MAC OS 10.7 and higher. You will need to use a third party 4K alignment tool for older Operating systems.

Bert,

Can you open Partition Work in BIBM. Click View MBR. What is the LBA number for each partition? And number of sectors in each partition?

Set BIBM to use that parameter. Shrink the partition a bit, slide it
up and then down and IIRC, that should so it. My memory is a bit hazy
but no doubt our friends here will correct me.

Not sure what you mean by Set Parameter. I'm guessing the parameters that the D: partition is using.
So simply shrinking the C: partition (in partition works) and moving it up, then back down, what does that change? Or do I have to change something?

Bert,

3396/2048 is not an integer so the partition is not 2048 sector aligned (1 MiB aligned).

Check BIBM Settings and make sure you have a tick in Align on 1MiB Boundaries. There shouldn't be a tick in Align on Cylinder.

As DrT indicated, Resize the Win7 partition 3 MiB smaller. Then Slide the Win7 partition so there is 2 MiB of Free Space Before. Then Resize the Win7 partition to the Max Size.

What is the Win7 LBA now? It should be divisible by 2048.

Hey Brian, and DrT

There was no tick next to "Align on 1MiB Boundaries", I added a tick.
Resized 3 MiB smaller, Slide up and left 2 MiB before.
Resized and did another Slide. Win7 partition LBA is now 2048, Success. :D

There is 2 MiB's of free space left below the Win7 partition, should I resize the Win7 partition to use it?

Bert,

Great news. Yes, get rid of the Free Space after the partition.

Bert,

When you are making your next BIBM CD (or UFD) put a tick in Align Partitions on 1 MiB Boundaries. It's on the Global Geometry and MBR Options (optional) window. Then you won't have to remember to check Settings each time you use BIBM.

In that case you'd only need to "slide" and leave the values as they are,
then if you want the end aligned, resize to the same size.
