Any Drive Letter 'C' issues in dual-booting Win7 & XP?

Post by Ambertus »

I'm on the verge of setting up one of my computers to boot either Windows 7 or XP installed on two separate hard drives. Naturally, I will be using BIBM.

I'm just wondering in advance what the best way of doing that would be, given that I need to have drive letter "C" assigned to the boot partition no matter which OS I boot up. (And I don't want to, say, hide one system partition from the other in order to do this.)

I ask because I've too frequently needed to run the SetWinDL.tbs script from the OSD Tool suite to assign drive letter "C" to a different XP boot partition in the past (i.e., when I had more than one XP partition and had not yet installed Windows 7 on that computer). Obviously, I'd hate to have to do something like that every time I switch from booting one OS to the other.

Any guidance or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks!

See http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/howto/ for general on installing to its
own partition. Then for installing on something that is not HD0, see

Unless I need to for a particular reason, and I try to avoid it where
ever possible, I always hide each windows install from any others.

They can and do interfere with each other. The only thing I can recall
happening was the loss of restore points - but I have hidden windows
installs from each other for years.

DrT,

Same here. I don't let Windows OS see each other. I don't use System Restore so I don't have restore points.

Can someone tell us about other issues with letting Windows OS see each other? I can't find this info in Google.

I think the restore points is the main thing. Allowing other windows
installations to be visible during another windows install with FUBAR
things - been there, done that, got the badge.

I do like system restore. It is a quick and easy way to fix many
issues - the main one IMHO is to stop some malware autoloading so it
can be eliminated. I back up my main windows installation about once a
week and the system restore is a safety net for not backing up more
often (which I should do).

In deference to those that it annoys, I will NOT mention again my
desire to be able to tell the difference between differential and
incremental backups in some way other than having to rely on my
memory.

It can during an install of 7 or 8 create that 100 mb partition elsewhere
then on the partition it's being installed to, I believe.

That has reminded me of another issue. Some software decides to plonk
some if its files in the largest NTFS partition it can find. Ye MS
Office, I'm talking about you.
