HP 15-n 220us laptop

Post by mjnelson99 »

This computer comes with Win 8.1 and some hardware things I like. I
would like to dual boot with Win 7 Home Premium.

Right now, I only have BING but would get BIBM if it seems practical.

Probably has the 100 mb partition so 3 primaries already used as well.
(restore, 100 mb, Win 8).

I would want Win 7 plus extended so 5 primaries eventually.

Is this a likely possibility since some new laptops seem to be problematic?
Thanks

P.S. It looks like HP may be going the way of no DVD drive as well.
One of their more expensive computers did not have one.

This computer does.

Did you have the laptop specifically configured as MBR? Otherwise, it's most likely a UEFI/GPT setup and may already have 4+ partitions. In that case, you'd have to convert to MBR first. If you do attempt this make sure to create a backup of the entire drive first in case you want (or need) to return to the factory state.

Is converting to MBR a problem for Win 8.1 at all?
Do UEFI/GPT show up differently in boot info?

I haven't purchased it yet. Was not sure I could safely use more than 4
partitions and their specs do not include that info as far as I could see.

Will review the PDF again an see if I missed anything.

I do have Image 2.87 and can easily image before I find out the other
stuff re MBR etc.

You can see the basic procedure here: http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb/article.php?id=580
Different systems may have other specific requirements or repairs required. You may lose some functionality also because most newer systems use UEFI features.

The UEFI BIOS can look very similar to a Legacy BIOS (e.g. text menus) or it may be quite different with graphics, mouse support, etc. Booting options can also be different (e.g. selecting a Windows installation instead of drive).

I was correct. the PDF from HP did not tell any of that stuff.

MJ,

Per MS requirements, ALL PC's with Win 8.x pre-installed, WILL have
'Secure-Boot' activated, AND most likely will have GPT presetup on
HDD's.

I gather it is not possible to use BIBM with either UEFI/GPT?

It looks like a nightmare in the making.
UEFI seems to lock us into MS and out of BIBM, Linux, etc.

I like the computer I listed but am considering finding out if I can get
drivers for Win 7 that I already have and can use.

Mary,

One possibility is to buy the computer, use BIBM to delete the partitions and convert the disk to MBR, change your BIOS setting to Legacy and then you can install BIBM and do a standard Win8.1 install from your supplied Win8.1 media.

That's assuming you don't like the TeraByte method. But the TeraByte method would be my first choice.
