Why does Windows assign drive letter to a hidden partition?

Post by timg11 »

I have changed some obsolete boot partitions to Hidden using BING 1.87. The new boot drive is an SSD. I'm keeping the old partition around because I'm still having problems with the SSD and IFW.

Previously, Windows showed the hidden partitions in Disk Management, but did not assign a drive letter (as I would expect).
Now, after re-arranging the connections to the SATA ports, Windows is assigning drive letters.

I booted back into BING and verified that the partitions are still hidden.

What else could cause Windows to see hidden partitions? What changed to cause Windows to ignore the fact that they are hidden? How do I re-hide them?

That is a good KB, but the last item applies to Win2K/XP/2003, and I'm running Win7.

However I was able to use the Disk Management interface to remove the drive letters.

The drive with the hidden partitions also has a BING partition on it that I am not using since the system does not multi-boot anymore (I hid the XP partition since it has been virtualized)
Would BING cause this problem? Should I just delete the BING partition if it is not being used?

no, if you've every made the partition visible to windows then just hiding
it by changing the file system id won't hide it.
