Jim,

These are the same placeholder keys used to install MSDN RTM Win8.1. Then using a genuine key certainly does Activate the OS.

I don't know about bootnow. The problem arises if the data partition
is changed in Win 7. When Win 8.1 loads there will be corruption. If
you only change the data in Win 8.1 you should be okay - if you do not
use hibernation in Win 7.

That is my understanding of the issue and I could be wrong.

I have fast-start off.

Will have Win 7 shut down and not hibernate.
Will use Hibernate in Win 8.1.
Will turn on Fast Start again in Win 8 and see how it all goes.

Just turn off fast boot and rest easy, anything that can cause corruption
like that should never have been implemented (MS of the past would have
never done it), IMO, it's pretty worthless anyway... The BIOS using PIO IO
makes the difference of a system taking 15 to 20 seconds to boot vs less
than 5 seconds (also of course drivers that may want to sit around waiting
for device responses).
