Can BING solve this problem?

Post by Dwingorp »

Hi!

This is not a problem with BING, but another problem, where BING may be the solution.

If I leave my Sandisk Cruzer plugged into my machine, when I reboot I hit a black screen with a cursor. It looks to me like maybe BIOS is finding an MBR, but no boot program, since there isn't one. (I use the Sandisk only for storing data.) I don't want to keep unplugging the Sandisk, and I don't want to change the boot sequence of my PC.

Can BING (or some other software) make some change in the Sandisk so that BIOS will not see it as a bootable device, and totally ignore it?

Thanks.

Is there a specific reason you don't want to change the boot order? If you leave the UFD plugged in all the time that seems like the easiest method.

Yes. I have rescued myself from major OS or partition disasters in the past by being able to boot into a repair 'disk' on a key drive EASILY. The machine I'm talking about is old and too full, and another disaster wouldn't surprise me.

Can BING make the small drive unbootable, or is there some similar solution?

Thanks again.

you can remove the active flag ... view mbr .. click set active on the
active partition on the ufd while holding the left shift. apply.

There are many freeware/open source utils to enable a USB stick to
boot. I use 'Rufus'.
