Hi Brian,

It's (BIU) installed on the VOSTRO. Why are you asking? It's currently not the newest version, but I've been hesitating updating it.

Why are you asking? Should I be using a different BootIt product (I have been wondering about that because it seemed that BIU was kind of an interim product)? Should I be using BIBM instead?

There may be more here that I'm not understanding, but why would you install BIU on the new HD1 and then restore a whole disk image to the new HD1? Wouldn't that overwrite the BIU you just installed.

Jim, sorry for the confusion.

BIU installs into the ESP. So if you didn't already have BIU installed you wouldn't be able to install it on the new SSD as the ESP is full. No Free space. But you do have BIU installed so it should be ok to Reactivate/Reinstall BIU on the new SSD. On the other hand, if you can't get BIU working on the new SSD you can use BIU boot media. So if you don't have boot media, make it now. You will need it for the restore.

BIU is my favourite software. You need BIU as you have a UEFI system and BIBM doesn't work in UEFI systems.

Regarding your "plan". Omit step 3. You will restore the image to a blank drive.
After restoring your Entire drive image, Reactivate/Reinstall BIU. Then it's time to fix the ESP size.

After restoring your image to the new SSD your system will boot directly into Windows. That's ok. Reactivate/Reinstall BIU when you are ready.

Edit... You will need BIU boot media to restore your image to the new SSD. Or you could use IFW or IFL boot media. Your choice.

Hi,

Sorry I know that this will confuse things... but I didn't see the last posts above, and decided that before I do anything, I wanted to update the BIU on the laptop.

The original BIU version was 1.37, and I noticed that there is now a 1.44, so I download that ZIP, unzipped the ZIP and then ran make disk to make a bootable USB with BIU 1.44.

This is a Dell so I rebooted with the USB plugged in and pressed F12 and then selected the USB with the BIU 1.44 installation, and I got an error when I told it do do the upgrade :(...

However now, if I reboot the machine, it IS booting in to BIU 1.44 :(!!

I guess I should be happy about that, but I am wondering what I actually have installed right now. Is the BIU 1.44 ok? Or might it be corrupted?

Why do I get that error when I try to upgrade BIU?

Thanks and sorry :(...

Jim, is this the same computer? If so you haven't got enough space in the ESP for the upgrade.

FYI, at this point when I try image in BIU - it says it can't do it...

If I was able to find the BIU 1.37 install media. Would that allow me to install 1.37 and be back where I was before? Also I think I have a BIU 1.28 installer. Would that work?

At this point, I am not sure about path forward...

presuming you have full backup of everything, you could just uninstall BIU, do the resize os partition, slide it and the reserved partition, resize the EFI System partition, then reinstall it.

Terabyte Support,

Ok I was able to get BIU 1.37 installed and BIU seems to be working again, and also if I try to click on image, it isn't giving me an error, so hopefully BIU 1.37 and the imaging are ok at this point.

So to respond to you comment, no, I don't have a full back of the whole drive, not recent anyway.

Also I was hoping to switch to the new 1TB SSD at the same time, but at this point, I think I'd be happy doing what you (and Brian, originally) were suggesting.

SO, FYI, I've just resized the OS partition, from about 250000 to (now) 200000.

I think you (and Brian) are suggesting that I now slide the OS partition and the reserved partition, correct? How much space would you recommend for the slides?

Thanks,
Jim
