Re: W8 Corruption.

I no longer have win8 installed but can confirm that there is disk
corruption with Windows8, even of partitions that are hidden from the Win8
operating system. My system had to be restored from previously made IFW's
images and I had to completely delete the Win8 partition before I could
again access the BootitNG screen. I'm not sure I want to test again to see
if disabling hybrid-boot would cure the problem. I'm so happy I had IFW
backups.

Based on a number of reports and a quick search of the Microsoft forums,
it's clear Win8 is causing disk corruption on other partitions. I suspect
it may have something to do with the new hybrid-boot gimmick which is
enabled (instead of disabled as it should be) by default. You can disable
hybrid-boot to see if all your chkdsk/corruption problems go away by doing
this:

1) Open Control Panel.
2) Choose Hardware and Sound -> Power Options
3) Click on "Choose what the power button does" on left.
4) Click on "Change settings that are currently unavailable".
5) Remove the check mark from the "Enable Hybrid Boot" or "Turn on fast
startup (recommended)" under Shutdown settings.

In the mean time, ensure you have a good current image of all your
partitions before installing W8 at this time.

Since my last post echoed yours a month has elapsed, with considerable tweaking and testing of
Win 8. It's now running quite well for a BETA. (Fast start and most auto-updates are disabled.)

Yet a retest of IFW confirms once again that an image of W8 created from within the active
W8 drive
continues to corrupt the NTFS on that drive during restore. An image of W8 made
on another drive does not. Hopefully this will be corrected in future W8 and/or IFW releases.

Borate,

That hasn't been my experience. I've created frequent IFW images and they restore fine from BIBM. I have Fast Startup turned off.

I, admittedly, don't use IFW, so I may be confused but what does from within the active
W8 drive
mean?

Are you putting an image file on the same partition that you are making an image of? Is that a valid thing to do?

I think not. image file should be on a separate partition to prevent errors.

While running W8 on the SATA drive an image is created and saved to another drive. When that image is restored, it corrupts the SATA's NTFS.
If, however, the W8 SATA drive image is made from within W7 on another drive, the W8 image restores without corruption.

I don't believe that it's possible to write an image to the same partition being imaged.

You should NEVER image to the same partition you are
actually imaging. That applies to all OS's.

You can use a different partition on the same disk if you
wish although this is putting your eggs in one basket.

It is better to use an external HD, 2nd internal HD, DVD, SD
card or something else.
