Alignment problem?

Post by sigi »

My HD-1 contains the Extended Partition plus a lot of FAT-32 and 218/DAh Images. The funny thing is that there is 2 MB free space in front and a 6 MB free space at the end which suggests to me that they might have formed an 8 MB free space originally. I cannot imagine what might have brought about such a strange layout, which obviously causes some issues like “device inaccessible” messages during certain boot-time operations and failure to boot from that hard drive any restored OS’s.

Is there a simple way to recombine the 2 MB and 6 MB blocks of free space mentioned or should I just shift the Extended to the beginning or resize its front end in order to take up these leading 2 MB?

If the drive starts with an extended partition (as it sounds like your
HD1 drive might), it is normal to see a small amount of free space at
the beginning of the drive, and there's nothing that can be done about
that. For the end of the drive, you would normally resize the last
partition if you wanted to get rid of that small bit of free space.

If you want to clarify your situation, you could post a partinfo listing
of your hard drives, using the free Partinfo utility that you can find
at the link below. From Windows, it's easiest to use the GUI
(partinfg.exe) version:

Also, you should clarify if you're using BING (BootIt NG) or BIBM
(BootIt BM), since you are posting in the BIBM group, but yet you are
talking about a feature unique to BING (image partitions).

According to your advice I will pursue this thread further within the BING forum under the same heading. Thank you so far.

@Tom Pfeifer

I initiated this thread again in the BING forum attaching my PartInfo according to your advice. However, I was not allowed to attach a text file which, as far as I could see, was the only output of partinfg.exe. So I made a screenshot of the partinfo tables and attached the jpg.

I cannot believe that attaching a partinfo.txt, which is much more useful than a screeshot and had been normal practice in the old BING newsgroup, can no longer be submitted in the new BING Group. That is why I asked for a solution to this problem in the figure caption. The answer is still pending.

Since it was your advice that I might submit my partinfo I thought it might be best to ask you for the best way to do it. Here comes the Attachment in question:
Attachments
As concerns the Attachment I was not allowed to attach the result of PARTINFG.EXE which was only available as PartInfg.txt. When I tried to attach it I got the message "The extension txt is not allowed." So I just made a screenshot. What should I do?

Sorry about that.

The best way to do it is probably to paste the contents of the partinfo.txt file into a "Code" block. You can do that by choosing the Code button.
it would end up looking like this:

Code: Select all

                            PARTINFG, Version 1.00
Copyright (c) 2010 TeraByte, Inc. All Rights Reseverd
