Newbie here with a couple of question

Post by liteace »

Hi All, I have here a Panasonic CF-18 laptop running windows XP pro, its fitted with a 320gb hard with 180Gb of free space. What I should have done is partitioned the hard drive when I installed it but I didnt, what I want to know is with the help of Bootit can I partition the 180Gb of free space without loosing the 117Gb of used space that had the OS and all my programes on ?

Thanks

Be sure you don't reduce the partition with XP on it too
small. Not sure for that large a partition what the minimum
would be. Check online or Microsoft itself.

Once it IS partitioned, you may be able to transfer some of
the files to the new partition and reduce the used size of
the C: drive.

BIBM can also image your drive before you start the resizing
so your current data is protected.

In the past I have heard at least 15%-20% free space is
necessary to even be able defrag.

Yep, but as always, backup your current data first!
Just good advice no matter who's program we use.

Depends on the defragger. Loads of free space is needed to not only
accommodate temp files, but also the 100s of MB of them that never
seem to get cleaned out when no longer needed. Just got 3GB back from
my children's PC that way.

I found CCleaner does a better job of cleaning up that junk
than using Windows. It made a HUGE difference on my laptop.

I don't use windows to clear out the junk, I do it manually. CCleaner
does not completely clear out the temp files. I have just done a test
run and much has been left > 200MB, and they are not files that are in
use either as I have been able to delete them manually.

There was not much to clean anyway as I had a clear out a few days
ago. TBH, I just use CCleaner for compacting my browser databases
every couple of months or so.

I would defrag and image that partition before making the
changes.

Make sure you allow the partition to be large enough after
the resize. Windows gets very unhappy with too little space.

My own Win 7 X64 partition itself takes up 26 GB of programs
without any large files like lots of audio/videos.

BIBM moves files if necessary. Considering how long defragging can
take, there may not be any net time savings. Personally I would not
(and do not ;-) ) bother.

I would definitely image beforehand and to a separate medium. I image
to a second internal hard disk and them copy my images to an external
hard drive (which has copies of all the local backups on my network).

Hope you are keeping well Mary.
