Major Problem--Help!

Post by jander41 »

I have been trying out Windows 8 using bootitng as my boot manager and Win7
as the primary OS. Suddenly today when I tried to boot back into Windows 7
(after using Windows 8), I got an error message saying there was a problem
with the boot files and I needed to repair windows. I tried the repair and
it did not work.

Then I tried booting again and did not get the bootit screen so tried to
reinstall bootit from the disk. It showed the patrition where bootit is
installed and said it had set it up (I did not get the reinstate option that
I usually get after loosing the bootit menu). When I rebooted the computer,
I still did not get the bootit menu and have been unable to get it after
several tries to reinstall bootit. I can work with paritions from the disk
but the option to work with editing the menus is greyed out. (Maybe that is
always the case when booting from the disk?)

I'm not sure what has happened, but I seem to have lost all use of the
computer. I am now trying a restore of the Windows 7 OS parition, but am
not sure if it will work or not. What do you suggest I do. Why would
Bootit not install?

Thank you!

Me again; The restore did work to get me back into Windows 7. Thank God for IFW!! However, I still have the other questions, as bootit is not installed. I'm a bit nervous about trying Windows 8 again, but the partitions that Win 8 were using are hidden right now and I would like to get them back. Has anyone else had problems with Windows 8 Consumer Preview messing up their dual booted OS using BootitNG?

Thank you again for any help!

JoRene,

That's weird. How many primary partitions are on the HD, including BING? Did you inadvertently select IT mode?

I have 2 harddrives, with (I think) 3 parititons on each, perhaps 4 on harddrive 0, including the EMBR for BING. I have tired again (after getting back my Windows 7 install) to install Bootit and it does not install. The only option I get when I put in the disk is to upgrade, so it must think there is a bootit installed. However, it does not seem to upgrade and when I reboot, the boot manager does not come up. I'm not sure what to do. I have the EMBR as the 4th partition on harddrive 0. Win7 is on the first partition of harddirve 1. The partition for Win8 is the first partition of harddrive 0. (In case any of this helps) Do I need to install Bootit to both harddrives? It was working fine (for years) until today with bootit on harddrive 0 in the 4th partition. I'm still stumped as to what happened.

You may have IT mode selected.

Do you see the brief BING text when you boot?

Immediately after the POST, press and hold down the Insert key. If IT mode is selected BING should appear.

I don't think I see a brief bing text but I will still try your suggestion. I don't know how I could have IT mode selected as I don't even know what it is. But thank you and I will let you know if it works.

It did not work, assuming I held the key down at the right time. Bing did not appear. Do you think it would help to delete the EMBR parition and recreate it, assuming I can do that from the disk. I do get the partition work icon. Or should I move the partition to another position on the hard drive? With all the problems I'm having, I'm a bit nervous about sliding partitions around, however.

Are you limiting partitions?

Try upgrading to BIBM first.

I don't think I was limiting partitions. I wanted to solve this without the expense of the upgrade, since bootitng is sufficient for my needs. Thank you again for the time you've given trying to help. I appreciate it. Maybe Terabyte will come in with a suggestion.

The options change after the first install if one uses a writeable
media to install. I use an SD card in a USB adaptor. Don't know if
that is relevant to your issue, but I so not bother with the wording
presented as long as BIBM just gets installed.
