byte-for-byte validation errors during restore

Post by Orochi »

Basically whenever I restore an image, I get byte-for-byte validation errors during restore process.
I tested memory and hard drives and did not find any errors.
Things I've tried.
I tried backing up live system with phylock and vss.
Tried backing up system drive outside of windows.
Tried changing location of the image.
Image is validated and looks good, but during restore I get those errors.
What is weird, is that if I run restore again, same image and same disk, I will not get validation errors.
Any ideas?

If you're using RAID, run a consistency check (may say something like
validate/fix).

Thank you for your reply.
No, not using RAID. I have the most basic configuration.

you could change out the cable too. You can enable /logl:10 or 50 or 100
for more details on which sector was changed and its value differences.
you'd want to provide the full log.

Re: byte-for-byte validation errors during restore

Run a higher log level to see what the data is. You can also get findlbaf
utility via ftp://www.terabyteunlimited.com/findlbaf.zip after looking in
the log, run it on one of the LBA's (from an elevated prompt). That will
tell you what is being changed.

Also, you should ensure the setting (general tab) "Delete Restore
Destination" is still enabled.

Re: byte-for-byte validation errors during restore

Thanks for your help.
How do you set log level to /logl:10 or 50 or 100?
In the settings, there is an option to enable log level, but no option to set the detail level of the log.

PS. I ended up reinstalling windows 10 yesterday.
Made a backup of a system partition. Then did a restore and did not get any validation errors.
Also, used the option to delete restore destination. Maybe this option helped.
However, few times in the past, I was able to do a restore without getting validation errors.
I will update this post if the problem comes back.

Another question. When we chose automatic restore, does the program still apply user restore settings?

One way is to add LogLevel=nn to IFW.INI under [Options]. /logl:nn can be added to the command if IFW is being run from a command line, batch file, script or whatever. I don't know how to set the log level from the GUI.

Thanks for guiding me in the right direction. The help file lists only levels 1 to 10. What do levels 50 or 100 do?

I don't know. I'm wondering if 10 or anything greater might produce the same results, but I really don't know.
