Restore of data partition fails to same SSD

Post by PsychBiller »

All partitions from a Samsung EVO 850 Pro were backed up to a single file by IFL 2.99-00. The system is UEFI with GPT. No partitions were encrypted.

I booted from a USB installation of IFL 2.99-00, which is the same USB used to make the original backup.

I used BIBM to delete all existing partitions, leaving a blank slate.

The backup is stored on a network share, so I used the built-in utilities on the USB to mount the share as net1.

I attempted an automatic restore of all partitions. File access method for the source is File (OS) from the net1 mounted share. I selected all partitions to restore the entire drive to a former state. I selected the restore option "Assume Original HD."

The Recovery partition (NTFS), EFI system partition (FAT-32), and Microsoft reserved partition (GPT Entry) restore fine. The data partition does not. The restore processes a small amount of data (varies, but always less than 1GB), and appears to hang. The time remaining counter ticks up and up and up. The data restored creeps up in 8MB increments. Something is very, very wrong.

If I click Exit, IFL asks if I want to cancel. If I click Yes, nothing happens. The only way out is to hold down the power button.

I am at my wits end. I don't have another system in which I could install the SSD. I have tried older images of the same drive made in the same way, and they fail, too.

you leave it until you get a write error or other error, then you choose to
ignore it, then at the end it will tell you the number of bad sectors
encountered, should be something low / resonable.

Hi PsychBiller,

Just so us lurkers can learn something, did you check "Validate" or "Validate byte-for-byte" when you did the backup?

Thanks,

I tried it both ways: with validate byte-for-byte and without.

Seems that should verify that the backup is OK. I'm suspecting that writing to your SSD is the cause of the hangup. Maybe try this:

Use "Diskpart" with the "clean" option to make the entire SSD unallocated. If the restore to the SSD still hangs, then try the Diskpart "clean all" option. Normally, just using "clean" for a SSD is recommended but in your case, maybe a "clean all" will be better since that writes zeros to every sector. Clean all takes about an hour per 320GB cleaned.

Here's a link to how to run Diskpart:

Just a possibility,

I wouldn't try a cleaning routine on an SSD!

I gave up on waiting for the restore to fail. It would have been at least 15 hours. I deleted all partitions and reinstalled Windows 10 again (!) from an ISO on a flash drive. So far, so good. I have deleted the formerly problematic data partition and restored from backup just to be sure I can.

The original problem was never solved, and it makes me nervous to think that a restore may not work.

you don't know how long it would be, it depends on how long the drive takes
to respond. The timer is worthless once the drive stops transferring data.

Glad things are working out for you.

Regarding running Diskpart "clean all" on a SSD, I respect your views on not running it on your SSD. But "clean all" writes zeros to the entire SSD like a secure erase does and what's the harm in running it one time? Anyhow, here's a link to a thread where the original poster ran a secure erase to his SSD to fix his problem:

Excerpt from the link:
"Okay so I was hesitant to do everything as I had some work do get done and chkdsk no longer wrecked my os, ***but finally secure erased it with parted magic***, set up part table GPT (had msdos chosen by deafult, not really sure what are these and what do they do). Everything works perfectly fine , not even a slightest error"

I had a similar issue to "The data partition does not. The restore processes a small amount of data (varies, but always less than 1GB), and appears to hang. The time remaining counter ticks up and up and up. The data restored creeps up in 8MB increments. Something is very, very wrong" in this topic.
I resolved the issue and was successful. Please check post: "IFW 3.06a Samsung 850 EVO success backup and restore" http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/ucf/vi ... f=4&t=2602 in case it can help you or others with the same or similar issues.
