Are both systems UEFI?

Yes, both are UEFI. However, the ThinkPad doesn't support Secure Boot due to its age. The Dell does support Secure Boot, and it is enabled. The ThinkPad BIOS settings are to boot in UEFI mode first, then legacy. The Dell is set to UEFI only, which is required for Secure Boot.

You did better than me. I couldn't get an Entire Drive backup with my UEFI/Secure Boot system, only a partition backup.

Not necessarily! I can do a full drive backup of the older system WITHOUT Secure Boot. It's the newer one that's giving me fits.

Sorry if you have already answered this but can you do individual backups of each partition with the exception of the MSR?

Not sure this is relevant here, but here goes.
My IFL boot SD card is ADDED to my boot menu as a UEFI item. It only
appears there when the card is used.

It may work for you?

Thank you for jumping in, Mary. I believe my system behaves in the same way yours does. The USB drive only appears in the boot menu if it was inserted at the time the system was booted.

it's not actually out of memory, it's a failure of an ioctl which occurs
when you include a partition with a file system windows doesn't support (or
can't access) and use the read-from-volume option. If a source bitlocker
volume is locked, you'll get that, if you include something like the MSR or
some other unique partition, you'll get that. If you don’t' use
read-from-volume then you can access all of them, the newer version displays
a more appropriate message and handles the msr.

I am using the latest version of IFW, which is 2.99-00 according to http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/downlo ... indows.htm. Are you referring to a version not yet released to customers that would display a more appropriate message?

I have unlocked the source BitLocker partition, so that isn't the cause of the problem.

I am not an UEFI or Windows 10 expert, so please explain what you mean by "the MSR or some other unique partition."

If I don't use the Read from Volume option, then the size of the backup is the full size of the drive instead of only the used data. What is the recommended procedure for doing a full drive backup of an unlocked BitLocker drive on a UEFI Windows 10 system?

PsychBiller,

If you do a UEFI Win10 install you get four partitions...

Recovery
ESP
MSR
Win10

Your computers could have OEM partitions in addition.

The following applies to IFW 2.99-00. Personal tests with BitLocker.
To backup in TBWinRE you would unlock the OS Volume and backup using Read from Volume. Then do a normal (not Read from Volume) multi-partition backup of the remaining partitions.

If you have an OS issue and decide to restore an image you would boot TBWinRE, unlock the OS Volume and restore the OS image. Win10 will boot, ask for your password and Bitlocker will be ON.

If you have a HD failure, replace the drive, boot TBWinRE, restore your multi-partition and OS images to Free Space. Win10 will boot, BitLocker will be OFF and you will have to turn it ON and encrypt again.
