Updated W7 to W10, IFW now much slower

Post by ronk »

Recently updated from W7 to W10. Using IFW for image backup through USB 3.0 port, getting 1.5 gb/min. Using IFL, getting better than 5 gb/min. On W7, was getting at least 3-4 gb/min. Why the change? I set priority HIGH, but didn't seem to matter.

Also, even more important, saw the sticky post of a warning of W8/W10 corruption with faststartup enabled (dated March,2016). Is this still true, ...do I still need to turn this off both for IFW and IFL images?
My shutoff settings don't include 'faststartup', unless I do a 'powercfg -h on' in command prompt mode. If hibernation is off, and faststart (and hibernation) isn't an option, does that mean my images will not be corrupted?

Thanks for the response, but need more clarification.

1) As to W10 drivers, likely not the issue, since did a data partition restore with IFW and got 4-5 gb/min. It's the IFW backup, with default settings, that seems really slow (maybe phylock?). Same cable, same USB3 external drive as was used in W7. Guess will resort to IFL usb stick boot for backups of the 'C' drive, since those speeds are very good.

2)Yes I am referring to the corruption of partition data possible with W10 if FastStart enabled. If FastStart doesn't show up as an option in power options (powercfg -h OFF), is FastStart then OFF and this is a non-issue? I don't use hibernation, so after the upgrade, I think W10 maintained that no hibernate setting. So, backups with either IFW or IFL should be OK, right?

As stated by Terabyte Support, whether backups are OK is not the relevant question. Forget the backups. What you should be concerned about is whether or not data on your partitions is getting corrupted.

Are you booting more than one OS on the PC? This whole corruption issue is only relevant to the case where more than one OS (or copy of the same OS) accesses the same partition(s), I think.

OK, I understand that, sorry if it seemed I was stating backups were the issue. But I was asking whether faststart is OFF if the option isn't present. Assume so and not to worry then.

However, my post was also about the slowness of backup with IFW with W10 and USB3.0, compared to W7. As noted earlier, if there were a driver issue, then both restore and backup speeds would be impacted, whereas IFW gave good restore speeds, but not backup speeds. IFL works great.

From an older posting:

>In Win7 the native vendor driver (Intel, Renesas/NEC, ASM, Fresco, etc.) is used, which are, from my experience, up to 30% faster than the generic USB3.0 driver from Microsoft in Win8.1.< and Windows 10.

Thank you, interesting point. So, on a Thinkpad T530, would I try Lenovo (Renesas) for USB 3.0 driver, I wonder?
I will likely continue to use IFL for now. Using SSD, and boot IFL from a USB stick, so fairly quick to restart and setup.

make sure your xhci driver exists too in the device manager. just had to
hassle with Intel USB3 drivers that killed all USB access whenever installed
on a z97 msi mobo. When Last Known Good Config didn't remove them, it was
going to be a pain since the kb/mouse was USB and didn't have access to
normal PS/2 type. Luckily got around it and finally installed via right
click in device manager and install driver. must have bee something with
their setup. But in looking for solutions, there were suggestions like
disable xhci in the BIOS, etc.. which basically would disable USB3.

So does this look OK for USB drivers? Or do I need to go deeper?

you'll have to test it.
