Feature request: UEFI booting of BIBM flash drive

Post by minimalist »

I could have continued in the last thread, but I'm hoping lots of people will chime in "I want that too.", and don't want that thread hijacked.

I am going to use BIBM for partitioning/cloning in UEFI/GPT systems, so I have BIBM on a flash drive.

I have systems where it is trivial to get the BIOS to boot legacy one time, and ones where it is near impossible. I have one netbook which won't boot the BIBM flash drive even in legacy mode, just says ".... 4.00" in the upper left corner and hangs. On all these systems, booting would be simpler if the flash drive booted in UEFI mode. I don't care about it being able to boot in secure boot, I can turn that off permanently.

So the feature request is to make it an option on the last page(seems the natural spot) of makedisk to make a dual boot UEFI/MBR booting disk, or an option for a UEFI booting disk.

Thanks for considering.

minimalist,

IFL has already been mentioned in this context. It boots in Legacy and UEFI mode. It contains BIBM Work with Partitions so there is little need to use a BIBM disc with a UEFI system.

Here are two reasons:

1) BIBM work with partitions is an elegant solution that starts up immediately. Loading Linux first to load the elegant solution, not so much elegance or speed.

2) In some cases(mine in particular), IFL won't work and BIBM will. My case: netbook with 2 USB ports, and when IFL boots UEFI the trackpad doesn't work. Hence to run IFL I need 1 port for the IFL disk, one port for a pointing device, and nowhere to clone onto :(. With BIBM, I can use the keyboard.

Note that it's not necessary to leave the IFL UFD plugged in. You can safely remove it after boot-up has finished to free up the port. The keyboard can also be used in IFL/partwork (Ctrl-Space will bring up the main menu).

I use IFL on a SD card and do remove it once IFL has booted.

If I don't remove it, I will go back into IFL rather than Windows.

Don't you have to disable Secure Boot prior to using using BIBM and then re-enable Secure Boot after using using BIBM? That isn't needed with IFL.

If they did enable UEFI booting in BIBM, they would presumably do it the same way as IFL with the entire disk as the ESP and you wouldn't need to disable secure boot.

Since I never use secure boot, I would rather it was a FAT32 partition that would boot UEFI or MBR as the linux live editions do(at least Arch linux).

Maybe Rufus (http://rufus.akeo.ie/) would be helpful in this regard?
It has many options for flash drive formatting.
