Command line help needed for saving image to right location

Post by Yottabytes »

Evidently, the copy or save location for images changes when external drives are added or removed and, thus, the IFW wizard does not work correctly for creating new tasks that involve saving an image to a drive even if the drive partition letter does not change.

For example I want to copy my Windows OS on drive parition C: to a folder in drive partition E:. The command outputted by the wizard: /b /d:w0@0x1 /f:"E:\Image\COMPLETE-$~YYYY$-$~MM$-$~DD$" /max:4GiB /purge:-11 /comp:15 /log:0 does this. However, as soon as I add an external hard drive, whether its F: G H or any other letter beyond E:, I can't complete the image backup. It seems the problem has to do with the "d:w0@0x1" identification which changes when I add or remove a drive. I played around with the "output disk ID to command line" and "Use volume label" but they didn't seem to have any effect. How do I fix this? And please give a sample command.

The "Output Disk ID to Command Line" option will show the disk ID when you look at the command line instead of drive number/letter references.

For example, the same command shown both ways:

imagew.exe" /b /d:w0@0x2 /f:"I:\backupname" /v
vs.
imagew.exe" /b /d:#0x527EE67@0x2 /f:{A23BBC18-58BE-4516-9A68-91C35457A9E9}@0x4:"\backupname" /v

In the above example, one partition is being backed up from an MBR disk to a partition on a GPT disk.

With (or without) an external drive installed, I am using this command containing the proper disk ID command switch (/b /d:#0xACDC2@0x1 /f:#0xFF505F68@0x1AE:"\Image\SD240II-$~YYYY$-$~MM$-$~DD$-+++4XXXX" /max:4GiB /comp:15) but I am getting the error message "Problems Were Found in the List of Partitons". IFW dialog shows what looks like corrupted volume label names even though they look fine in both Windows and Linux. It might also be worth mentioning that these are Samsung 1TB drives using the new 3D V-NAND technology, which maybe contributing to the error.

you'd probably want to provide a partinfo listing.

Here you go. For some reason BBCode is off, even though I checked the on box in my profile. So sorry for the formatting.

That's just icon clutters from "Actual Tools." It's a "feature" of the utility when small windows are shown :-)

It's there in HD2, the extended partition is in an invalid configuration.
You can of course suppress the message with the /uy option after the /b and
things will still backup.

But this issue was started by some linux tool sometime in the past several
years that started creating that invalid layout with a entry that jumps over
other EBR's. You can fix it to get rid of the warning message by simply by
adding/removing a logical drive in the extended partition in Windows. BIBM
will have the option to rebuild the EBR chain soon (on a short list).

Yes, I set that drive up with hdparm and the Linux tool Partition Magic. I'll try Windows. Thanks very much.
