After rebuilding from Thunderbird 17.3 to TB 24 and in essence starting
from scratch, it is working very well.
I needed an email from 9/27 TB 24 that is missing from the current
version so did a restore of that date and got what I needed.
Did a backup using Mozbackup before starting the first restore so I
could quickly get back to today's file.
Then did another restore to go back to the current backup.
Both looked good and worked well.
Just did a straight restore both times.
Mozbackup worked flawlessly with TB 24 backups and restores.

Re: Thunderbird 24 restores with Mozbackup
I use MailStore Home (Freeware) for all my mail backup needs. Also
backs up online accounts.
Not only does it backup all my emails, it reads them too so if I do
not want to deal with new email (my clients are set to download when
opened) I can.

Sounds like a good option as well.

It really is. I am blown away by the program. Definitely worth a look.

I hate it when someone hijacks a post for selfish reasons, but when it is not selfish, it seems like fair game. So, as I have just found two cents in my pocket, I want to point out an open-source alternative of estimable value:
