Ping Mary

Post by DrTeeth »

Hi Mary,

Hope you are well. IIRC you are a Thunderbird user so you might know
something I don't.Officially, development stopped at v17 with just
security fixes; but betas all the way up to v24 are available.

Do you have any info about what on Earth is going on?

Not really. I haven't looked for betas. May now do so.
As long as I can use TB, I probably will.

FYI. Mozbackup allows backing up TB & Firefox files.
I found there is a process to get a clean restore. Let me
know if you are interested & I will detail that. Otherwise,
a restore would pick up old ISP info long out of date.

I have stuck with 17.3 since I was having problems with html
images showing up in my emails.

After I removed IE 10 that stopped so am not sure it was
something connected to that or to TB itself.

Since images are working using IE 9 and TB 17.3 I just leave
well enough alone for now.

Last time I looked TB was @ 17.8. I am downloading them in
case I want to to go there later on.

I looked online after getting your question.

It looks like TB 24 is set for release tomorrow
Tue, 9/17/2013???

Watch for it soon anyway.

I downloaded TB 24 beta 3 and installed a bit ago.

I did need to get a new version of Lightning that is working.

So far, it looks & acts much like TB 17.0.3.

Mozbackup also works with it for backing up.
Will not try a restore for a while unless I run into
problems. I created a backup before installing so I can go
backwards if necessary.

Just downloaded it here. There have been betas of all (missing
versions) up to and including the latest v24. I have just started
using OpenPGP encryption via Gpg4win. There are other apps for Linux.
I currently use Outlook 2010 for my email needs and I like the way
that Gpg4win integrates. Thunderbird also has a plugin for encryption
that I would like to investigate.

May run both in parallel for a while, with one leaving the mail on the
server and the other clearing it off.

Thanks for you input and help Mary, much appreciated.

FYI, Mozbackup works in Windows only. He said he does not
intend to go to other OS's.

That is partly what makes Thunderbird so useful to me.

Development has stopped sadly.

There is a plugin (so works in all OSs ) that backs up TB.

Don't keep it a secret. What is the plugin & where?

Mozbakup has some downsides since unless I take special
steps doing a restore my former ISP, Comcast, will show up
again when it certainly is not wanted.

I am not sure he has stopped completely in updating the
program, though. Never were frequent as I recall.

I'm using Portable Thunderbird ver 24 from my Data partition. It's simple to just backup the entire folder as everything is in that folder.
