hyberfil.sys

Post by Bill »

Under "How to Minimize the Size of Image Backups" the KB says:

When using Image for Windows with PHYLock (Windows 2000/XP/Vista/Windows 7 only), this tip is not applicable, since (by default) Image for Windows will skip the hibernation file when PHYLock is installed and enabled (unless the Omit Hibernation Data option is deselected).

I am using Phylock on a Win XP Pro system.

I don't see the Omit Hibernation Data option in IFW settings.

In IFW Phylock settings: Disable Usage is not selected, and Use VSS When Available is selected.

IFW is including hiberfil.sys in my images, and my question is why?

It's a backup/copy option that will show up on the backup options dialog.

I was blind, I guess. However, it has been checked, and I am still getting hiberfil.sys included.

the file will still be there, just the data compressed to zero.

The file size TBI View shows for hiberfil.sys is over 2 GB. Is it really 0?

Yes it is. Try creating an image with the tick removed from "omit hibernation data". See the difference.

there would be 2G of zeros (compressed to zero in the image backup). The
backup isn't file level, so you can't just omit files reliably, it's just
the data in the file that is omitted so it takes zero space,
extracting/restoring will be zeros.

Why not have a use-configurable dialogue that could exclude a folder
or folders in a similar way? The above could be used to exclude my
games (which I install into one folder, never the default 'program
files') which would save backing up 180GB of data.

because the imaging tools are not file based, the file system meta-data
can't just be omitted. a new file based tool could do all that...

DrT,

I guess you have considered having a separate partition for your games. Don't like the idea?
